Team USA has bats and resolve to win WBC (but are arms enough?)

PHOENIX — Team USA is missing maybe the best five American pitchers — , , , and — as it tries to buck its stunningly mediocre World Baseball Classic record and win in the sport America invented.

But say this for this team: They brought a group with an uncommonly patriotic bent. The 27 guys who agreed to play for Joe Torre’s team are a supremely focused, determined and even personable group that is talking a great game on the eve of the third WBC event.

“Write this, ‘We didn’t come all the way here to (bleepin’) lose,'” USA outfielder said.

Torre and his veteran group of coaches, including longtime right-hand men Larry Bowa and Willie Randolph, are impressed by the competitive attitude shown by a group led by , , and other country-first guys. Randolph, in particular, said he noticed a difference between this crew and Team USA’s previous two squads, suggesting this one is singularly focused on the prize after a dismal 7-7 mark posted in the disappointing 2006 and 2009 events.

No one can claim that the USA roster is made up of only the very best American players, but Randolph pointed out the roster’s strengths include speed, versatility and other less obvious positive traits. gives any team options. can put a scare into any opposing pitcher.

Torre talked up the table-setting Rollins and . , a .300 hitter, was the ninth-place hitter in one of the exhibitions. The strong and crazy-deep 10-man bullpen, with at the end, would be the envy of any manager.

In a short few days, the staff and its players have bonded. Perhaps best of all, it also has the guys who wanted to be here representing their country, which USA officials often cite as the biggest positive.

That is, of course, another way of admitting that not all the very best and brightest stars are here. In particular, the starting pitching is solid but less than glittering.

Verlander and Kershaw are said to have shown interest in playing, his disappointment over comments by Birmingham City following his dismissal from the club. The 40-year-old was sacked on Tuesday, with the Blues reasoning that Monk did not serve the “long term interests of the club” and that they wanted to “adopt a fbut Kershaw had a hip injury late last season that allowed the to discourage him, and Verlander’s extra October innings delayed his training start, eliminating him.

Team USA retains outward confidence. But there’s concern that Team USA has a bull’s-eye on its back. And there’s more concern that many of the top starters aren’t here.

“The other teams want to beat the piss out of the U.S.,” one USA official said. ‘”Until we win, we’re not going to get all our (very) best players to come.event pitch invasions. The Liverpool Echo says Liverpool are planning to write to UEFA to voice their concerns after a pitch-invader left Adrian with an injury by gatecrashing the Super Cup celebrations. The Reds were toasting their 5-4 penalty-shootou”

The hope is that once Team USA brings home the trophy, then relays how great winning felt, no one will again decline an invite. Sometimes it’s hard to push.

is in the group of late October players from last year. is returning from a shoulder injury, an ankle injury.

, the best player in the majors last year, hasn’t earned financial security yet. So it’s understandable he didn’t go. (Word is, he consulted with Bryce Harper, who also didn’t make it).

The pitching is the real issue though. , , and are four more that couldn’t, or didn’t, make it. Contracts just signed, about to be signed or being negotiated acted as a disincentive for top pitchers. Arms are fragile, and there’s a fine line between a $150-million-plus contract and no contract at all.

Team USA seems to be doing an exemplary job not focusing on who isn’t here (except when we ask about it), though it’s obvious who’s missing. One plus: None of the other teams seems to have overwhelming starting pitching, either.

Team Mexico, who Team USA faces in its opener Friday, saved its ace for this game. Mexico used journeyman Rodrigo Lopez in its loss to Italy on Thursday. Other teams are similarly thin.

Team USA will start with 37-year-old knuckleballer , had been close to completing the deal in January for £200,000, but it has taken until now for Kilmarnock to confirm an agreement had been reached.Smith, 16, will join the Elite Development Squad with immediate effect.Kilmarnock said in a statement:whose fast knuckleball could be a major weapon, then use , and as starters. It’s a very nice group but less than optimal.

When one Team USA official was reminded how great the lineup should be, he noted, cautiously, “What happens from 60 feet, six inches is what matters.”

Dickey should give Team USA a great chance in the opener, as it appears he’s reached his prime in his late 30s, winning the National League Cy Young Award last season. He also is very much into it, which counts, too.

“I’m here because this is one of the greater privileges of my athletic career. And that’s how I see it,” Dickey said.

Team USA will try to make up for what it lacks in established arms with bats and attitude. It’s a group that loves the idea of representing its country, which can’t hurt.

“We are not here to get out of spring training. We’re not here to go on a little vacation,” Wright said. “It’s time for us to win. A lot of other teams have been preparing longer. But pride will kick in. We are 0 and 2. We want to be the team that snaps that.”

Randolph, Wright’s first major-league manager with the , is thrilled at how the star third baseman has grown into a leader. Others, too, are here because they are excited about it.

New outfielder personally called Torre to beg his way onto the team as a reserve. first baseman rushed over from Surprise, Ariz., when went out with a wrist injury.

Pride is already starting to kick in.

“It’s our game,” Torre said. “That doesn’t mean other teams can’t play it. But we’re here to win. We’re here to get to San Francisco. We’re interested in moving on. Our goal is long-term, long range.”

Their hearts and their intentions are in the right place. The only question is whether they have enough arms to do the job.

Phillies’ Halladay says he feels great, but can he be great again?

(US Presswire)

CLEARWATER, Fla. — The speak glowingly about what once was. They speak hopefully about what Roy Halladay could still be.

They don’t know, not yet.

They can’t know, no matter how good he says he feels this spring.

They can only listen to him talk about how good he feels, thanks to a new workout program designed to address a lower-back issue he now blames for derailing his 2012 season.

“I feel as good now as I have in any spring training,” Halladay said Wednesday.

The Phillies will take that as a positive, just as they’ll take encouragement from the way and have looked in the early days of spring. While the key Phillies questions don’t yet have definitive answers, the early signs are good.

That seems especially true for Howard and Utley, so much so that manager Charlie Manuel said Wednesday, “I always felt like both of them would come back and have big years.”

The Phillies need that, but they also need Halladay. Manuel talks about getting 50-60 wins from the trio of Halladay, and .

More on PhilliesStories |

Before last year, they would have taken Halladay’s share of those wins for granted. He won 40 games in his first two seasons with the Phillies, and he averaged 17 wins a year in his last four seasons with the Blue Jays.

He was at leasadrid sports director Pedja Mijatovic says Gareth Bale will be hurting hlex Oxlade-Chamberlain has revealed how Jordan Henderson shuts down any talk of Liverpool winning the Premier League table. The Reds have all but secured their first top crown in 30 years as they hold a 22-point lead over Manchester City. But Oxlade-Chis career by staying.Bale remains a Real player after the Premier League transfer window closed yesterday.Mijatovic told El Larguero: “If he stays, Madrid is not going to have prt in the argument for best pitcher in the game, and he deserved to be called the most dependable.

“He was something,” Manuel said. “He was absolutely unreal.”

Then Manuel paused.

“He’s thrown a lot of bullets.”

Those bullets weren’t coming in as hard last year, and they weren’t nearly as effective. Halladay still insists velocity was and is less of an issue than his ability to locate, but you can count on the Phillies carefully watching for both when Halladay takes the mound for his spring training starts.

Manuel said the Phillies plan to take it a little slower than usual, that Halladay might well throw just one inning and 25 pitches in his first spring start.

“I think he’s going to be fine, really,” Manuel said. “I think it’s going to take time, but I think he’s going to get there.”

If you sense a touch of uncertainty in those words, you’re probably right. Halladay is 35 now and will turn 36 in May. Even without the shock of last year, we’d be wondering how long he could keep pitching at the level he had.

You sense him wondering it, too, even as he talks about how good he feels, about how much the new workout program has helped and about how he still wants to throw tons of pitches and tons of innings.

He knows he’s nearer to the end than to the beginning, no matter how well he does this year.

“Every year you go in, you realize you’re a little older, a little slower,” Halladay said. “The game’s getting quicker. The guys are getting younger.”

The Phillies aren’t young, but they still have more talent than manyutch great Wim Kieft has warned Tottenham fans not to get carried away with new signing Steven Bergwijn. The purchase from PSV Eindhoven scored on debut in victory over Manchester City last week. But Kieft argued in De Telegraaf: “Bergwijn is just 22 give them credit for. The question marks are big ones, but the ceiling remains high for a team just one season removed from 102 wins.

The goals are still high, too, and it shouldn’t surprise anyone that Halladay spoke of winning a World Series.

“If it takes 320 innings and I can throw that many, I’m going to throw it,” he said.

The guaranteed part of his contract only runs through this year, and not surprisingly, he said there have been no discussions yet about extending it. Halladay said he doesn’t see himself ever pitching for another team, but how this year goes will no doubt help determine how long the Phillies can see him pitching for them.

They saw last year what happened with a sub-par Halladay, a Halladay whose spring training struggles raised alarms and whose regular-season struggles never really calmed them. The lower back was the problem, he came to believe by the end of the season, and it was the problem that led to everything else.

“It seemed like the more I threw, the more of a problem it became,” he said.

So the legendary workout program underwent a total change, with more emphasis on strengthening the core and on what Halladay called “sport-specific” training.

“We’re not running at 4 in the morning,” rotation-mate and workout-mate said.

Halladay still starts early, maybe at 5:30 or 6 a.m. He still works hard.

“I saw him, and he was completely drenched,” Manuel said.

But devotion to work was never a problem for Halladay.

What the Phillies are hoping is that years of heavy workloads and advancing age aren’t problems that Halladay can’t overcome this year.

They don’t know that yet. They can’t know that yet.

They can only listen to Halladay talk about how good he feels, watch, and see that bullpen sessions like the one on Wednesday morning aren’t a problem, and then hope.

“I think we really need him to be good,” Manuel said. “Don’t get me wrong. He doesn’t have to pitch no-hitters.”

The Phillies remember when they could expect Halladay to do just that. It’s not that long ago.

He was absolutely unreal, as Manuel said.

Healthy or not, can he ever be like that again?

Free agent preview: Scott Hairston

content_img

(US Presswire)

Over his career, Scott Hairston has done two things fairly well. He’s managed to hit for power, and he’s been particularly effective against left-handed pitching. That type of skill set definitely puts a limit on his usage, and teams have noticed, limited Hairston to no more than 464 plate appearances in a single season. Those skills are useful enough to keep him employed, however, and potentially valuable in a platoon role. As Jonny Gomes showed, players with part-time power can get paid on the open market. But even though Hairston’s 20 home run season put him in a good position entering free agency, he shouldn’t expect to receive a significant pay day.

The Hairston vs Gomes comparison falls flat in one major area, which becomes obvious when looking at their career slash lines.

PlayerPAAVGOBPSLGScott Hairston23990.2470.3020.449Jonny Gomes30600.2440.3370.455

Gomes holds a significant advantage in on-base percentage, which is likely the reason the Red Sox gave him a two-year, $10 million deal. Gomes’ strong walk rate led to a .377 on-base percentage last season. That figure ranked 18 in baseball among players with at least 300 plate appearances. Hairston, on the other hand, finished the season with a .299 OBP, one of the worst rates in the league. They actually produced similar valule for PSG fullback Thomas Meunier.Everton are in talks with PSG about a deal for the Belgium international. However, Le 10 Sport says Atletico are also interested in Meunier, well aware the fullback’s future at PSG is clouded.PSG need to raise €100e last season, with Gomes’ 2.1 WAR just edging out Hairston’s 2.0, but Gomes has a mnchester Uns they’re calm about his situation at PSG.The Polish goalkeeper left Chelsea in the summer for PSG, where he has been strictly third choice this season. But agent Yves Le Mee told Paristeam.fr: “From the start, it was agreed that he had to attack the ited midfielder Bruno Fernandes has earned an award in Portugal after leaving Sporting CP.Fernandes has been named as the midfielder of the month for January in the Portuguese top-flight.He played four league games for Sporting during the ore dependable skill set, which led to a nice deal on the market.

On top of that, Gomes is also a significantly better platoon player. Against lefties, Hairston has hit .276/.325/.500, with a .353 wOBA. That’s pretty decent, but doesn’t come close to what Gomes has shown against lefties. Gomes holds a .284/.382/.512 line against southpaws, with a .385 wOBA.

It’s nearly impossible to find a good comparable for Hairston since most of his recent value is tied to his production last season. Looking at players who have produced similar value to Hairston over his past three seasons gives you guys clearly on their way out of the league. The most similar players to Hairston over that period includes Jody Gerut, Aaron Rowand and Reed Johnson. Gerut’s career ended the next season and Rowand only received 351 more plate appearances before his career was over. Only Johnson went on to play multiple seasons after his age-32 season. When Johnson signed with the Dodgers the next year, it was only for $800,000.

Hairston made $1.1 million in 2012, a number that is sure to rise after a strong walk season. But due to his poor performances in prior seasons, signing him to a multi-year deal would be risky. Nearly all of Hairston’s value over the past couple seasons comes from 2012. He’s not really a two-win player going forward, even though he played like one last year.

That makes him fairly difficult to evaluate. He’s likely to make more than $1.1 million next season, but he doesn’t deserve to make $5 million annually like Gomes. That probably puts Hairston somewhere between $2 million and $4 million per season. Due to his inconsistent performances, he should probably only get a one-year deal. Hairston could be a strong fourth outfielder on a contending team, but could opt for a better opportunity with a lesser team if it means he’ll receive more playing time.

Well, not much has changed, according to Stanton’s agent, Joel Wolfe (via CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman). On that tweet in particular, Wolfe told Heyman, “It wasn’t a reaction. It was a state of mind.”

Wolfe wouldn’t say if Stanton has requested a trade from Miami. But, needless to say, the young star is not pleased with the situation.

Stanton, 23, hit .290/.361/.608 with 37 homers and 86 RBI in only 123 games. Had he not missed several weeks after knee surgery, it would have been a pretty good bet that Stanton would have led the NL in home runs.

Oh, and if the Marlins choose to keep him, Stanton doesn’t have much say in the matter. He won’t be a free agent until 2017.

Ranking the five worst owners in baseball: An ode to Miami’s Jeffrey Loria

content_img

(US Presswire)

In light of the once again staging a pathetic fire sale, I figured the time was right to rank the worst owners in baseball. And, yes, I guess this is a spoiler alert for who is going to be sitting atop the rankings, but who cares? Jeffrey Loria deserves all the crap he’s going to be getting the next several weeks (months?).

More Marlins-Jays trade coverage More coverage | | | |

Anyway, we’ll get to him in a second. For now, we’ll attempt to line up the four owners/ownership groups who suck, but just don’t suck nearly as bad as Loria.

We’ll do this while longing for 30 owners like Detroit’s Mike Ilitch.

That the Orioles made an improbable playoff run this past season does not relieve Angelos for what he’s done to this once-proud franchise over the past 15 years. Buck Showalter and his players get the credit for the magical 2012s Atletico de Madrid in Saturday lunchtime’s Spanish capital ‘derby at the Santiago Bernabeu. One of the most historic club rivalries in all of world football has become even hotter in recent years. What’s more, this weekend’s game could have a huge s season, notd virtually no contact with owner Mike Ashley during his stint at the club. When news broke that recently departed Toon boss Rafa Benitez did not even know about his official departure until a club statement released onto social media, Allardyce was n Angelos. I’ll need to see an extended run of playoff berths before thinking Angelos is good at owning an .

Remember when the Indians used to go to the playoffs every year? It wasn’t that long ago, but it sure seems like it. The Dolans bought the team in 2000 and the Indians have made the playoffs only once since 2001. They have traded CC Sabathia and Cliff Lee since then, though. Cry small market if you wish, but Dolan bought the club for $323 million in 2000 and Forbes magazine values the club at $410 million now. Also, the Reds, Cardinals and Brewers play in smaller TV markets. They seem to do OK.

If there’s anything fans in a great baseball city like Kansas City hate, it’s frugality. Glass has refused for years to put much money into the on-field product, instead content to stare at the not-in-the-red bottom line and enjoy the revenue sharing checks. He has said and the Royals did trade for . So maybe he will move off this list soon. We’ll see.

The Mets should be one of baseball’s powerhouse franchises, residing in by far the largest media market. Yes, they share the market with the uber-powerful Yankees, but it’s New York. Two teams can easily succeed as elite franchises there (In fact, I’d argue that a third team could be supported — the Brooklyn Marlins, perhaps? I kid, I kid.) Instead, the Mets toil underhe Championship club. The former Norwich City, West Ham and Wales full-back replaces Jose Gomes, who was sacked last week after less than 10 months in charge. The 55 year old has spent most of his coaching career working under Mark Hughes, most recentl a mass of financial questions, stemming at least partially from the Wilpons’ involvement with ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff. It’s actually amazing that the Wilpons aren’t No. 1 here now that Frank McCourt doesn’t own the Dodgers anymore. Then again. …

First, . Miller nailed it. Good lord, for years we heard they just needed a new stadium. Then they got one, using taxpayer money to help get the job done. And now after just one year in their luxurious new digs, it’s another firesale. Embarrassing. Let us also not forget it was Loria who ruined the Montreal Expos. So I guess we can say he ruined two franchises. Let’s hope it stops there. He needs to sell this ballclub and never own one again.

Bob Nuttig, Pirates; the Monfort family, Rockies; Lew Wolff, A’s; and Hiroshi Yamauchi of the Mariners, simply because he’s never attended a game of the team he owns. Also, I almost threw in Frank McCourt just because I felt like he deserved it.

Yankees’ list for fill-in, part-time 3B stretches from The Bronx to Queens

The have made a list of possible third base fill-ins. And they may have to check it not once or twice, but many times. Because it’s long. Very long.

The list includes Chase Headley (in fact, in terms of desirability it may be headed by Headley, though he remains a long shot). But it stretches from The Bronx to Queens.

(Some of the list is below.)

The list is of potential third basemen to fill in while Alex Rodriguez is out with a broken hand. But since the Yankees are almost certain to win the division and A-Rod will be back in anywhere from four to seven weeks, the replacement doesn’t have to be a superstar.

And that isn’t the only reason. The Yankees already have  — who they like very much — to play third in A-Rod’s absence. And they also have , with Eduardo Nunez on the way back.

Anyway, after Headley, who is thought of as a l doubts about his future won’t affect their Champions League final preparations.Pochettino raised further question marks over his willingness to stay at Spurs when he suggested last week that the clash with Liverpool on June 1 could be his last game ong shot since the Yankees don’t want to part with top prospects, especially for a need of minor importance. Here are some others thore outplayed by Ch and fitness of Liverpool ace Mohamed Salah.Garcia has claimed Egypt have had to alter their tactics from the Africa Cup of Nations as Mohamed Salah continues to feel the effects of his long season with Liverpool. The forward made 52 appearances in alelsea in the Europa League final. The Blues smashed their London rivals 4-1 in Baku.Speaking to BT Sport, Emery said: “First is congratulations to Chelsea. In the first half we played with good opportunities to take a good result. Weught to be on the list (there’s probably more): Willie Bloomquist, Brendan Ryan, Yunel Escobar, Chone Figgins, Ty Wigginton, Jose Lopez and Cody Ransom.

Mark Reynolds may be on the list, too, but that’s a long shot. Scott Rolen may be, too, but he’s pretty fragile these days. Stephen Drew is thought to be too expensive in terms of prospects. came off when he went in trade to .

Escobar isn’t an interesting one since he’s a shortstop. Figgins is, too, since he’s played his way into baseball oblivion for nearly two years.

Did the Mariners win because of some (Ichiro) subtraction?

NEW YORK — Seven-game winning streaks with the are rarely simple. The last time they had one, the manager quit. That was five years ago, and the manager was Mike Hargrove. Now, the Mariners showed up at Yankee Stadium Friday with seven straight wins, and some people want to credit the wins to another guy who left town.Is this all because of Ichiro?I mean, it’s obvious that the Mariners took off winning shortly after they traded their long-time (too long, maybe?) right fielder. But does that mean they took off winning because they traded one of the best players they ever had?We always seem to ask these questions with the Mariners, who went from below .500 to the American League Championship Series the year after Ken Griffey Jr. left, and had their best year ever — 116 wins — the very year after Alex Rodriguez skipped town.

So are they winning now because is gone?”Like what, Ichiro’s gone and now we’re unbeatable? No,” catcher said Friday, before the Mariners’ streak ended with a 6-3 loss to the Yankees. There are those in the Mariner clubhouse who do think there’s a link, although I couldn’t find any willing to say so publicly. And to be fair, there are also plenty who insist there’s no impact, whether they’re speaking publicly or privately.”I think we were a bunch of young kids who were starting to figure it out,” general manager Jack Zduriencik said. “I thought the kids after the [All-Star] break would play pretty good.”Mariners players will remind you that they won five of the last seven games before Ichiro was traded to the on July 23. And I’ll remind you that their seven straight wins came against two teams — the and — with basically Triple-A pitching staffs. Also worth noting: In 11 games since Ichiro left for the Yankees, Mariners right fielders are 4 for 38 (.105).Is it possible that Ichiro’s departure relaxed the other players? Perhaps, but Mariner players say Ichiro was never hated in his own clubhouse, the way was in . Ichiro, they say, had his routine and often kept to himself, but he wasn’t really a distraction. His presence probably nandinho’s 90th-minute own goal ensured the Eagles claimed a draw at Etihad Stadium in a remarkable conclusion to the game. The result leaves champions City 13 points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool, who have two games in hand and play Manchesdid make things tougher on manager Eric Wedge, because as long as Ichiro was in Seattle, there was no question that he had to hit somewhere in the top three spots in the lineupthan Collins admits he’s surprised by interest from Manchester United. The 18-year-old Irish youth international is highly rated in his central defensive position but has seen precious little first team action.“They were a bit unexpected to he hones. That was always going to be true, even though Ichiro has the lowest OPS (.641) of any full-time American League outfielder. With the Yankees, of course, Ichiro happily accepted batting eighth. The other question is whether Ichiro’s departure allows the younger players in the Mariner clubhouse to step up, the way Bobby Abreu’s departure in 2006 allowed the to become ‘s team, and ‘s team.Too early to tell, Mariners players and executives say. It’s also too early to know if players like and and have any chance to make the impact Utley and Howard eventually made.Ackley has hit just .198 in the month since he took over the leadoff spot from Ichiro. At one point, the Mariners considered sending Ackley back to the minor leagues. They did send Justin Smoak, back, after he hit .189 in 90 games.Zduriencik, for his part, insists that the Ichiro trade was driven by Ichiro’s desire to play for a contender.”We had to honor that, respect that,” he said.Still, it’s clear that Mariners management loved the idea of moving past the Ichiro era, and that Wedge loved the idea of being able to write young players’ names into the top three spots in his lineup. What isn’t clear is whether there’s any greater meaning in the recent hot streak, whether it’s either a result of Ichiro leaving or even simply a sign that Zduriencik’s rebuilding plan is beginning to work.Even with the seven straight wins, the Mariners entered play Friday 30th in the major leagues in on-base percentage and 29th in slugging percentage. And even if some of that is Safeco Field-related, it still suggests how much work there still is to be done. The Mariners insist they’re getting better. One of the biggest reasons that Zduriencik has resisted all the calls to trade is that he thinks this group can win soon enough that Felix will play a part in it.”We’re heading in the right direction,” Wedge said Friday. “I don’t know how faush is stunned by Real Madrid fans’ treatment of Gareth Bale.Bale is expected to leave Real this summer.”When I look at his record at Real, he has an incredible record and I don’t know what happens there,” Rush told BBC Sport. “At the end of the day,r we are in the process, but we’re headed in the right direction.”And whether the Ichiro trade had any relation at all with the winning streak that followed, it still was a step in that right direction.

In case that isn’t enough, the Yankees have made the official announcement of the acquisition.

McDonald, 33, will merely provide outfield depth for the Yankees, who are still without Brett Gardner. McDonald can handle all three outfield positions, though he’s best suitwelcomed the international break. The loan signing from Eintracht Frankfurt admits he’s had a whirlwind first month in England.Willems told the Evening Chronicle: “Personally, it has been a great time to get some rest.”It has been chaotic for me.”I caed for left field. He was hitting .214/.309/.369 with two homers, nine RBI, 17 runs and seven doubles in 99 plate appearances for the Red Sox before being designated for assignment last week.

While this isn’t technically a trade, a move involving these two clubs is quite rare. The last time there was a trade between the Yankees and Red Sox came back in 1997, when Yankees traded a player to be named later and Tony Armas to the Red Sox for Randy Brown and Mike Stanley. The Yankees later sent Jim Mecir to the Red Sox to complete the trade.
