Dodgers facing pitching crunch before Sunday’s roster deadline

content_img

The have acquired a lot of players and spent a whole bunch of money over the last 12 months, especially on the pitching side. They have a logjam of arms to clear before Sunday’s 3 p.m. ET roster deadline, when all 30 clubs must have their 25-man opening day rosters finalized.

We can fit all of Los Angeles’ big-league-ready pitchers into four caggling with his massive summer price-tag.Previous Gunners boss Unai Emery approved the £72million purchase of Pepe from Lille last summer, but the Ivory Coast international has so far scored just three goals in 21 Premier League appearances for the tegories:

: LHP , RHP , RHP , RHP , LHP , RHP , RHP , LHP

This is the easiest group. These guys will all make the team because they’re either really good or because the team paid a lot of money to acquire/retain them in the not-too-distant past. As easy as it gets.

: LHP

Elbert resumed throwing this week after on his elbow. He’ll begin the year on the DL and appears to be a few weeks from returning.

: RHP , LHP , RHP

In another year, these three would have been fighting for a bullpen spot during spring training. Because the Dodgers are so loaded, they’ll instead go to the minors and serve as depth players who will help cover for the inevitable injury.

: LHP , RHP , LHP , RHP , RHP , RHP

Assuming the Dodgers carry a typical 12-man pitching staff — five starters and seven relievers — four of these guys will make the team while two others will be left on the outside looking in.

Gregg is on a minor-league contract. Though he hasn’t been particularly effective in recent years (92 ERA+ from 2011-12), he allowed just one run on three hits and no walks in 10 1/3 inning this spring. Guerrier had a rough spring (6.48 ERA) after missing most of last season with an elbow issue, but he’s owed $4.75 million in 2013. Belisario is out of minor-league options — meaning he can’t be sent to Triple-A without clearing waivers — and pitched to a 150 ERA+ in 2012.

Capuano, Harang and Lilly are where it gets really interesting. All three are starters who lost their rotation spots due to the club’s spending spree. Capuano, 34, finished the spring strong after a rough start (7.20 ERA overall). As a lefty, he could move into the bullpen to complement Howell. At the same time, he has trade value because he’s relatively affordable ($6 million in 2013) and was solid last summer (102 ERA+).

Harang, 34, has also had a rough spring overall (8.20 ERA), but like Capuano he is coming off a solid year (105 ERA+) and is affordable ($7 million). He doesn’t have Capuano’s injury history (which includes two Tommy John surgeries), but teams do value left-handedness, which Harang can’t offer. He also doesn’t have much experience pitching out of the bullpen.

Lilly, 37, has pitched to a 14.00 ERA this spring and was limited to just eight starts (122 ERA+) last summer due to shoulder problems. Between that and his salary ($12 millioty to break down deep-lying opponents after Sunday’s 2-0 defat to Watford. The result means United have won only once in their 17 games in which they have enjoyed the majority of possession.”We were sloppy, we gave the ball away numerous times especin), he lags cn touch.Mihajlovic was diagnosed with leukaemia in July, so spent all of pre-season and most of the campaign so far in hospital undergoing two courses of chemotherapy.“Don’t worry, the boss can make himself heard even when he’s not physically preseonsiderably behind Capuano and Harang in the trade-value department. There is room for all three guys in the bullpen, but it will cost the team elsewhere.

The Dodgers haven’t made any indications about their pitching plans, but my guess is they will trade either Capuano or Harang (Mets? Rockies?) before Sunday’s deadline and somehow cut ties with Guerrier. That could mean a trade, a release or a trip through waivers. Belisario, Gregg, Lilly and either Harang or Capuano would join the other eight guys on the opening day staff. Injuries (Lilly’s shoulder? Guerrier’s elbow?) could change things, obviously.

That is all just a guess on my part. It seems like the Dodgers have so much pitching depth — both starters and relievers — that sticking both Capuano and Harang in the bullpen would be a waste. Some team will surely give up a prospect for one of those guys. They’re probably stuck with Lilly given his salary and recent injury history, and Belisario was too effective last summer to cut loose. I suppose Gregg could go in favor of Guerrier if the team doesn’t think the scouting reports back up the spring performance. Something has to give, though. Los Angeles simply has too many arms for too few spots right now.

Team USA has bats and resolve to win WBC (but are arms enough?)

content_img

PHOENIX — Team USA is missing maybe the best five American pitchers — , , , and — as it tries to buck its stunningly mediocre World Baseball Classic record and win in the sport America invented.

But say this for this team: They brought a group with an uncommonly patriotic bent. The 27 guys who agreed to play for Joe Torre’s team are a supremely focused, determined and even personable group that is talking a great game on the eve of the third WBC event.

“Write this, ‘We didn’t come all the way here to (bleepin’) lose,'” USA outfielder said.

Torre and his veteran group of coaches, including longtime right-hand men Larry Bowa and Willie Randolph, are impressed by the competitive attitude shown by a group led by , , and other country-first guys. Randolph, in particular, said he noticed a difference between this crew and Team USA’s previous two squads, suggesting this one is singularly focused on the prize after a dismal 7-7 mark posted in the disappointing 2006 and 2009 events.

No one can claim that the USA roster is made up of only the very best American players, but Randolph pointed out the roster’s strengths include speed, versatility and other less obvious positive traits. gives any team options. can put a scare into any opposing pitcher.

Torre talked up the table-setting Rollins and . , a .300 hitter, was the ninth-place hitter in one of the exhibitions. The strong and crazy-deep 10-man bullpen, with at the end, would be the envy of any manager.

In a short few days, the staff and its players have bonded. Perhaps best of all, it also has the guys who wanted to be here representing their country, which USA officials often cite as the biggest positive.

That is, of course, another way of admitting that not all the very best and brightest stars are here. In particular, the starting pitching is solid but less than glittering.

Verlander and Kershaw are said to have shown interest in playing, his disappointment over comments by Birmingham City following his dismissal from the club. The 40-year-old was sacked on Tuesday, with the Blues reasoning that Monk did not serve the “long term interests of the club” and that they wanted to “adopt a fbut Kershaw had a hip injury late last season that allowed the to discourage him, and Verlander’s extra October innings delayed his training start, eliminating him.

Team USA retains outward confidence. But there’s concern that Team USA has a bull’s-eye on its back. And there’s more concern that many of the top starters aren’t here.

“The other teams want to beat the piss out of the U.S.,” one USA official said. ‘”Until we win, we’re not going to get all our (very) best players to come.event pitch invasions. The Liverpool Echo says Liverpool are planning to write to UEFA to voice their concerns after a pitch-invader left Adrian with an injury by gatecrashing the Super Cup celebrations. The Reds were toasting their 5-4 penalty-shootou”

The hope is that once Team USA brings home the trophy, then relays how great winning felt, no one will again decline an invite. Sometimes it’s hard to push.

is in the group of late October players from last year. is returning from a shoulder injury, an ankle injury.

, the best player in the majors last year, hasn’t earned financial security yet. So it’s understandable he didn’t go. (Word is, he consulted with Bryce Harper, who also didn’t make it).

The pitching is the real issue though. , , and are four more that couldn’t, or didn’t, make it. Contracts just signed, about to be signed or being negotiated acted as a disincentive for top pitchers. Arms are fragile, and there’s a fine line between a $150-million-plus contract and no contract at all.

Team USA seems to be doing an exemplary job not focusing on who isn’t here (except when we ask about it), though it’s obvious who’s missing. One plus: None of the other teams seems to have overwhelming starting pitching, either.

Team Mexico, who Team USA faces in its opener Friday, saved its ace for this game. Mexico used journeyman Rodrigo Lopez in its loss to Italy on Thursday. Other teams are similarly thin.

Team USA will start with 37-year-old knuckleballer , had been close to completing the deal in January for £200,000, but it has taken until now for Kilmarnock to confirm an agreement had been reached.Smith, 16, will join the Elite Development Squad with immediate effect.Kilmarnock said in a statement:whose fast knuckleball could be a major weapon, then use , and as starters. It’s a very nice group but less than optimal.

When one Team USA official was reminded how great the lineup should be, he noted, cautiously, “What happens from 60 feet, six inches is what matters.”

Dickey should give Team USA a great chance in the opener, as it appears he’s reached his prime in his late 30s, winning the National League Cy Young Award last season. He also is very much into it, which counts, too.

“I’m here because this is one of the greater privileges of my athletic career. And that’s how I see it,” Dickey said.

Team USA will try to make up for what it lacks in established arms with bats and attitude. It’s a group that loves the idea of representing its country, which can’t hurt.

“We are not here to get out of spring training. We’re not here to go on a little vacation,” Wright said. “It’s time for us to win. A lot of other teams have been preparing longer. But pride will kick in. We are 0 and 2. We want to be the team that snaps that.”

Randolph, Wright’s first major-league manager with the , is thrilled at how the star third baseman has grown into a leader. Others, too, are here because they are excited about it.

New outfielder personally called Torre to beg his way onto the team as a reserve. first baseman rushed over from Surprise, Ariz., when went out with a wrist injury.

Pride is already starting to kick in.

“It’s our game,” Torre said. “That doesn’t mean other teams can’t play it. But we’re here to win. We’re here to get to San Francisco. We’re interested in moving on. Our goal is long-term, long range.”

Their hearts and their intentions are in the right place. The only question is whether they have enough arms to do the job.

Dodgers to give away mini statue of Robinson, Newcombe, Campanella

Once again, well done, Dodgers promotional braintrust. It’s amazing what people can do once freed from the shackles of Frank McCourt, no?

Ranking the five worst owners in baseball: An ode to Miami’s Jeffrey Loria

content_img

(US Presswire)

In light of the once again staging a pathetic fire sale, I figured the time was right to rank the worst owners in baseball. And, yes, I guess this is a spoiler alert for who is going to be sitting atop the rankings, but who cares? Jeffrey Loria deserves all the crap he’s going to be getting the next several weeks (months?).

More Marlins-Jays trade coverage More coverage

Anyway, we’ll get to him in a second. For now, we’ll attempt to line up the four owners/ownership groups who suck, but just don’t suck nearly as bad as Loria.

We’ll do this while longing for 30 owners like Detroit’s Mike Ilitch.

That the Orioles made an improbable playoff run this past season does not relieve Angelos for what he’s done to this once-proud franchise over the past 15 years. Buck Showalter and his players get the credit for the magical 2012s Atletico de Madrid in Saturday lunchtime’s Spanish capital ‘derby at the Santiago Bernabeu. One of the most historic club rivalries in all of world football has become even hotter in recent years. What’s more, this weekend’s game could have a huge s season, notd virtually no contact with owner Mike Ashley during his stint at the club. When news broke that recently departed Toon boss Rafa Benitez did not even know about his official departure until a club statement released onto social media, Allardyce was n Angelos. I’ll need to see an extended run of playoff berths before thinking Angelos is good at owning an .

Remember when the Indians used to go to the playoffs every year? It wasn’t that long ago, but it sure seems like it. The Dolans bought the team in 2000 and the Indians have made the playoffs only once since 2001. They have traded CC Sabathia and Cliff Lee since then, though. Cry small market if you wish, but Dolan bought the club for $323 million in 2000 and Forbes magazine values the club at $410 million now. Also, the Reds, Cardinals and Brewers play in smaller TV markets. They seem to do OK.

If there’s anything fans in a great baseball city like Kansas City hate, it’s frugality. Glass has refused for years to put much money into the on-field product, instead content to stare at the not-in-the-red bottom line and enjoy the revenue sharing checks. He has said and the Royals did trade for . So maybe he will move off this list soon. We’ll see.

The Mets should be one of baseball’s powerhouse franchises, residing in by far the largest media market. Yes, they share the market with the uber-powerful Yankees, but it’s New York. Two teams can easily succeed as elite franchises there (In fact, I’d argue that a third team could be supported — the Brooklyn Marlins, perhaps? I kid, I kid.) Instead, the Mets toil underhe Championship club. The former Norwich City, West Ham and Wales full-back replaces Jose Gomes, who was sacked last week after less than 10 months in charge. The 55 year old has spent most of his coaching career working under Mark Hughes, most recentl a mass of financial questions, stemming at least partially from the Wilpons’ involvement with ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff. It’s actually amazing that the Wilpons aren’t No. 1 here now that Frank McCourt doesn’t own the Dodgers anymore. Then again. …

First, . Miller nailed it. Good lord, for years we heard they just needed a new stadium. Then they got one, using taxpayer money to help get the job done. And now after just one year in their luxurious new digs, it’s another firesale. Embarrassing. Let us also not forget it was Loria who ruined the Montreal Expos. So I guess we can say he ruined two franchises. Let’s hope it stops there. He needs to sell this ballclub and never own one again.

Bob Nuttig, Pirates; the Monfort family, Rockies; Lew Wolff, A’s; and Hiroshi Yamauchi of the Mariners, simply because he’s never attended a game of the team he owns. Also, I almost threw in Frank McCourt just because I felt like he deserved it.

Jeremy Affeldt one of many postseason heroes for Giants

content_img

(Getty Images)

DETROIT — One of the many unsung heroes in the Giants’ World Series sweep of the Tigers is left-handed reliever Jeremy Affeldt. Not only did the veteran work 1 2/3 all-important innings in the 4-3, 10-inning Game 4 Giants win, but he sliced through the middle of the Tigers’ powerful offense in one of the most pivotal parts of Game 4.

With the scored tied, Affeldt walked Avisail Garcia to start the eighth inning. Evidently he just wanted to challenge himself, because Affeldt proceeded to strike out triple crown winner Miguel Cabrera … then elite power hitter Prince Fielder … then postseason home-run machine Delmon Young. Affeldt then opened the ninth inning by striking out Andy Dirks. He’d get a flyout off the bat of Jhonny Peralta before departing.

More Tigers-Giants coverageVideo: More World Series Coverage

Soclub to the Champions League final, Pochettino says they must buy to maintain their progress. He told Partidazo de Cope: “I will not make decisions after the final, it is important to know what the future plan is. If we want to return to the Champions in 1 2/3 innings, Affeldt recorded four strikeouts while allowing no one past first base, even though he was facing the meat of the Tigers’ order late in a tie game. Still, the back-to-back-to-back K’s of Cabrera, Fielder and Young were most impressive.

The overall result wasn’t altogether shocking, considering how hot Affeldt has been of late. During the postseason, he threw 10 1/3 innings, allowing only five hits, three walks (one was intentional) and nary an earned run. He struck out 10.

The funny thing is, Affeldt did it all through yet another weird injury. He seems to be a magnet for those — remember the sliced hand as he was separatiner United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Alexis Sanchez should be fit forelevision channel to feature on sports streaming subscription service DAZN in Italy, reports, /.The agreement, which was confirmed by DAZN, will see the (over-the-top) OTT platform show a range of content from the top-flight Italian club’s Milan TV, the start of the season. The Chilean suffered an injury representing his country at Copa America.Sanchez suffered a hamstring strain during their defeat in the third-place playog frozen hamburgers with a sharp knife, or perhaps hurting his knee while hugging his son? Then, in Game 5 of the NLDS against the Reds, a hard foul ball into the Giants’ dugout sent Affeldt to the ground to avoid being struck, bracing himself with his left hand and jamming it. And yet, he still continued to thrive in the postseason.

“He did such a tremendous job down the stretch,” said Game 4 starter Matt Cain. “He’d been kinda struggling with some little injuries throughout the season. It was kinda odd, it seemed like him getting oddly hurt in Cincinnati kind of benefitted him a little bit.”

And while Affeldt was good before the injury, Cain is kind of right. Affeldt allowed three hits in 3 2/3 innings before the injury with two strikeouts. After, he only gave up two hits in 6 2/3 innings with eight strikeouts. Even ignoring stats, the eye test showed us a knee-buckling breaking ball. Cain agreed.

“He went out there with unbelievable stuff with the sinker/slider combo.”

And the other thing Affeldt did was record perhaps the three most important outs of the series. So when praising the likes of Pablo Sandoval, Marco Scutaro, Sergio Romo, Tim Lincecum, Ryan Vogelsong, Brandon Crawford, Gregor Blanco, Hunter Pence, Buster Posey, Barry Zito, Madison Bumgarner, Bruce Bochy and, well, pretty much the entire team, do not forget about Affeldt. He was integral.

How the new free agent compensation system works

content_img

(Getty Images)

One of the most important changes brought about by MLB’s new collective bargaining agreement has to do with how teams are compensated for losing free agents. Since we’re up against the free-agent signing period, let’s take a look at those new rules and how they compareer’s “apology” about him as motivation at Arsenal.Holding moved to north London from Bolton for around £2million in the 2016 summer transfer window – having only previously played in the Championship.”Unfortunately no one speaks about the performanc to the old ones.

Under the old system, noteworthy free agents were classified by Elias (nonsensically, in some cases) as being either “Type A,” “Type B” or “Type C” players. Teams that lost an or A- or a B-rated free agent to whom they had offered salary arbitration received compensation in the form of additional draft picks. To be more exact, a team losing a type-A player received the signing team’s first- or second-round pick (depending on the signing team’s draft slot) and a supplemental pick between the first and second rounds. A team that lost a type-B player was given a supplemental choice only. The loss of a type-C resulted in no compensation.

The system now in place doesn’t entail any arbitrary classifying of free agents. Instead, a team that wishes to receive compensation must submit a “qualifying offer” to the outgoing free agent. A qualifying offer constitutes a one-year proposal worth at least the annuaham. The defender sees the Anfield showdown as an opportunity rather than an assignment to be scared of.“You can see it two ways,” said Alderweireld after their 1-1 draw with Watford. “It’s a big opportunity for us on Tuesday. We must use that.“l average salary of the top 125 free agents from the previous winter. For this offseason, that comes to a one-year offer of $13.3 million.

If a team makes such a qualifying offer to an outgoing free agent and the free agent signs elsewhere, then his former team will receive a sandwich draft pick between the first and second rounds. The signing team, meanwhile, will forfeit its first-round choice — unless it’s a top-10 pick, in which case the team would give up a second-round pick. The lost picks don’t go to any other team; rather, the teams behind the vanished pick all slide up a slot.

One other important change is now in place: To be entitled to compensation, a team must now have a departing free agent on its roster for the entirety of the season. Under the old framework, a team that acquired a walk-year player at, say, the non-waiver trade deadline could offer that player salary arbitration at season’s end and thus be entitled to compensatory draft picks. That’s no longer permitted.

For example, in previous years, the Angels would be compensated in the event that Zack Greinke signed elsewhere (provided, of course, they offerr United’s academy.Cox replaces Nicky Butt, who has moved into the new position of Head of First Team Development.Cox said: “Having spent over 20 years working to support the development of young people, it is an honour to be asked to lead the Mancheed arbitration to him). That won’t be the case this time around, since Greinke was on the Angels’ roster for only part of the 2012 season.

So … got all that?

Mat Latos ready for Game 5 start

content_img

(US Presswire)

CINCINNATI — Last December, Walt Jocketty traded three of the Reds’ top prospects to for a pitcher he thought could put the team over the edge — the type of pitcher that you can count on in the postseason if you have just one game to win. will have his chance to prove he’s that guy on Thursday.

Latos will start Game 5 of the National League Division Series against the Giants for the Reds at Great American Ball Park on Thursday afternoon with the chance to send to the National League Championship Series for the first time in 17 years.

Latos, 14-4 with a 3.48 ERA, came into Game 1 in relief for the injured and pitched four innings of one-run baseball. He was 2-0 with a 0.56 ERA against during the regular season and has quite the history with the team. To say he’s fired up, one teammate said, would be an understatement.

After the Game 4 loss, Latos was brought into the interview room for a postgame news conference. Manchester United team of the Premier League era.The Red Devils lost 2-0 to West Ham United on Sunday, leaving theme with eight points from their first six matches in the Premier League.”This is the worst group Manchester United have ever had since tHis responses were terse, but he said he was certainly up for the task, especially pitching on regular rest.

“I’m just looking at it as another start,” Latos said. “I just got to go out there and pitch my game.”

The last time Latos faced a Giants team in a do-or-die situation, the Giants beat Latos and the Padres on the final day of the 2010 season — “2010 was in 2010. 2012 is a little different,” Latos said. “It’s two years ago, so …”

He’ll be facing Giants ace , the loser of Game 1.

“All four games have been pretty mentally tiring, well-played games on our end there and well-played games on their end here,” Reds left fielder said. “It’ll be a good matchup, Latos, Cain, that’s two pretty-good pitchers.”

Despite the Reds’ two losses, the team remained confident, especially in Latos.

“I’m excited he’s getting the ball, I have a lot of confidence in him, he’s got a lot of confidence,” catcher said. “He’s going to be Mat, he’s going to be aggressive and come at guys and do what it takes. He’s pitched well for us, he’s been hot. That’s all in our favor.”

Imagine what they’ll get for him now.No, I Pep Guardiola can be tempted back home.Font plans to stand for election at the next Barca presidential poll and is in contact with Al Sadd coach Xavi and agent Carles Puyol about quitting their current jobs to join his ticket and return to their for’m not going there. Not yet. It wouldn’t be fair to . It wouldn’t be fair to the Mariners.Besides, now that the King has written himself even more deeply into Mariners history, how could they ever think of trading him (if they ever did think of it)?

How could they ever let him leave, after what he has done — and what he did Wednesday.

More on Hernandez, MarinersRelated links

We probably shouldn’t rank perfect games — perfect is perfect, right? — but I’m about to, anyway. This one was as good as it gets. This was a pitcher so dominating that you were sure the weren’t going to break it up — and so confident that he was sure of it, too. This was a guy who had a 95 mph fastball — but mostly stayed away from it because his curve and sinker were even better.”Late and just straight down,” catcher said, describing Hernandez’s curveball in a postgame interview on ‘s Root Sports. “You can’t hit that. No human can.”That’s what the Rays had to be thinking. That’s what I was thinking as I watched. That’s no doubt what you were thinking, too.No one can hit that.Hernandez had 12 strikeouts, and I’m half-tempted to write that he ONLY had 12 strikeouts. The surprise wasn’t that the Rays never got to first base. The surprise was that 15 of the 27 guys who came to the plate actually put the ball in play.Of course, only four of the final 12 guys did put it in play. After the fifth inning, no one got a ball out of the infield. That domination was part of what made this special, but only part of it.The other part was that it was Felix. They call him the King in Seattle, but when you’re so good that you only need a first name, you don’t really need a nickname (even if it’s a fitting one).Everyone knows Felix . . . as opposed to, say, Phil Humber. It was Humber who threw the first perfect game of 2012, back in April, in Seattle against Felix’s Mariners. And it was Humber who Felix referred to as “” in his postgame television interview Wednesday.I bring that up not to belittle Humber, and not to make fun of Felix’s faulty memory. I bring it up because of what Felix said it meant to him.”When [Humber] did that, I said, ‘I have to throw one. I have to,'” Hernandez said.He was thinking about it.He was thinking about it in April, and he was thinking about it Wednesday.”It was in the mind the whole game,” he said. “It was, ‘You’ve got to do it. You’ve got to.'”A pitcher who tells himself that he has to throw a perfect game — and then does it?Yes, that’s special. That’s Felix. And yes, that’s why he’s worth so much to the Mariners — and would be worth so much if general manager Jack Zduriencik ever decides he’s willing to trade him.

But he can’t.

Zduriencik regularly says that he won’t trade him. He regularly says that you win with pitchers like Felix, with pitchers capable of doing what Felix did Wednesday. There just aren’t that many of them out there. But what if he did trade him? If he did, it would happen in the winter, rather than in July, because the Mariners believe it would be easier to create a market then. If he did, he’d want a huge return, and he’d want players back who could help the Mariners win right away. It’s very possible that Zduriencik never wacht Frankfurt defender Martin Hinteregger. It is no secret the Gunners are looking for long term defensive signings in the January and summer transfer windows.William Saliba will join the squad at the start of next season, but the Gunners want anotheill trade away the King. But if he did, imagine how much he could get back?Especially after a day likee with Atletico Madrid. The striker quit Chelsea for Atletico last January.”On a personal level, I feel at home,” Morata noted.”I’m very comfortable with my teammates, with the people at the club, and on a professional level it’s been a very important Wednesday.
