Dodgers facing pitching crunch before Sunday’s roster deadline

content_img

The have acquired a lot of players and spent a whole bunch of money over the last 12 months, especially on the pitching side. They have a logjam of arms to clear before Sunday’s 3 p.m. ET roster deadline, when all 30 clubs must have their 25-man opening day rosters finalized.

We can fit all of Los Angeles’ big-league-ready pitchers into four caggling with his massive summer price-tag.Previous Gunners boss Unai Emery approved the £72million purchase of Pepe from Lille last summer, but the Ivory Coast international has so far scored just three goals in 21 Premier League appearances for the tegories:

: LHP , RHP , RHP , RHP , LHP , RHP , RHP , LHP

This is the easiest group. These guys will all make the team because they’re either really good or because the team paid a lot of money to acquire/retain them in the not-too-distant past. As easy as it gets.

: LHP

Elbert resumed throwing this week after on his elbow. He’ll begin the year on the DL and appears to be a few weeks from returning.

: RHP , LHP , RHP

In another year, these three would have been fighting for a bullpen spot during spring training. Because the Dodgers are so loaded, they’ll instead go to the minors and serve as depth players who will help cover for the inevitable injury.

: LHP , RHP , LHP , RHP , RHP , RHP

Assuming the Dodgers carry a typical 12-man pitching staff — five starters and seven relievers — four of these guys will make the team while two others will be left on the outside looking in.

Gregg is on a minor-league contract. Though he hasn’t been particularly effective in recent years (92 ERA+ from 2011-12), he allowed just one run on three hits and no walks in 10 1/3 inning this spring. Guerrier had a rough spring (6.48 ERA) after missing most of last season with an elbow issue, but he’s owed $4.75 million in 2013. Belisario is out of minor-league options — meaning he can’t be sent to Triple-A without clearing waivers — and pitched to a 150 ERA+ in 2012.

Capuano, Harang and Lilly are where it gets really interesting. All three are starters who lost their rotation spots due to the club’s spending spree. Capuano, 34, finished the spring strong after a rough start (7.20 ERA overall). As a lefty, he could move into the bullpen to complement Howell. At the same time, he has trade value because he’s relatively affordable ($6 million in 2013) and was solid last summer (102 ERA+).

Harang, 34, has also had a rough spring overall (8.20 ERA), but like Capuano he is coming off a solid year (105 ERA+) and is affordable ($7 million). He doesn’t have Capuano’s injury history (which includes two Tommy John surgeries), but teams do value left-handedness, which Harang can’t offer. He also doesn’t have much experience pitching out of the bullpen.

Lilly, 37, has pitched to a 14.00 ERA this spring and was limited to just eight starts (122 ERA+) last summer due to shoulder problems. Between that and his salary ($12 millioty to break down deep-lying opponents after Sunday’s 2-0 defat to Watford. The result means United have won only once in their 17 games in which they have enjoyed the majority of possession.”We were sloppy, we gave the ball away numerous times especin), he lags cn touch.Mihajlovic was diagnosed with leukaemia in July, so spent all of pre-season and most of the campaign so far in hospital undergoing two courses of chemotherapy.“Don’t worry, the boss can make himself heard even when he’s not physically preseonsiderably behind Capuano and Harang in the trade-value department. There is room for all three guys in the bullpen, but it will cost the team elsewhere.

The Dodgers haven’t made any indications about their pitching plans, but my guess is they will trade either Capuano or Harang (Mets? Rockies?) before Sunday’s deadline and somehow cut ties with Guerrier. That could mean a trade, a release or a trip through waivers. Belisario, Gregg, Lilly and either Harang or Capuano would join the other eight guys on the opening day staff. Injuries (Lilly’s shoulder? Guerrier’s elbow?) could change things, obviously.

That is all just a guess on my part. It seems like the Dodgers have so much pitching depth — both starters and relievers — that sticking both Capuano and Harang in the bullpen would be a waste. Some team will surely give up a prospect for one of those guys. They’re probably stuck with Lilly given his salary and recent injury history, and Belisario was too effective last summer to cut loose. I suppose Gregg could go in favor of Guerrier if the team doesn’t think the scouting reports back up the spring performance. Something has to give, though. Los Angeles simply has too many arms for too few spots right now.

Mariners turned profit in ’12 despite low attendance, $84M payroll

content_img

Think it’s tough for Major League Baseball teams to make money? Well, the made $5.86 million last season, .

That’s definitely not a huge figure, as many baseball players earn more than that in a given season. But here’s why this is important: The Mariners ranked 26th in attendance last season, only drawing 21,258 fans per game, .

So we’re talkinyear extension of their kit deal with sportswear firm Kappa until the end of the 2021/22 season, reports, /.According to Calcio Finanza, the original five-year agreement, due to expire at the end of the season, was worth €8 million (US$8.7 million)g about a fourth-place team barely drawing over 21,000 per game with a payroll north of $80 million still making money. And I couldn’t help but think about the Miami Marlins’ offseason.

The Marlins had a similar payroll in 2012, at $89,875,132. Of course, the trade of in July helped free up some dollars, but overall they weren’t drastically higher than the Mariners. The Marlins ranked 18th in attendance, drawing 27,400 per game. So if the Marlins were losing money while the Mariners made money, the business model needs to be altered.

For Jeffrey Loria and company, that just means slashing payroll without worrying about their immediate on-field product. Now, let’s understand something: Teams shouldn’t gather payroll just for the sake of doing so. Getting ‘s salary off the books, for example, was the correct move. He was already overpaid and then forgot how to be a quality closer. I’m just finding it hard to believe the Marlins had no shot at building a contender around now-departts new Manchester United teammate Bruno Fernandes can enhance his own game.Pereira is determined to take his own chances to shine in United’s midfield, with a start likely against Club Brugge on Thursday night, and the arrival of Fernandes can assisted , and . Saying they finished in last place — Loria’s favorite excuse this offseason — is far too simplistic. There were injury issues and they started selling (with otiations along with Real Madrid.Real are locked in talks with Chelsea over a fee for the Belgium captain, but are unhappy with their valuation.Chelsea are insisting on at least €100m to sell Hazard – a fee Real president Florentino Perez views as the and trade) when they were only seven games out of a wild-card spot.

Let us not forget that for years the Marlins promised everything would be different once they secured their new stadium, and now they have it, at a significant price () to local taxpayers. And club president David Samson had the nerve to say on Tuesday night’s broadcast of the World Baseball Classic that Marlins Park has been “great for Miami.” Pathetic.

As for this season in Miami, attendance is going to plummet, but fret not Loria fans, he’ll make plenty of money. The Marlins’ payroll won’t even hit $40 million this season.

The lesson in all of this is that if you ever have enough money to join an ownership group of a Major League Baseball team, do it in a heartbeat. You’ll make money and you don’t have to be accountable to your fan base unless you want to be.

David Price loves his Rays and his beard (but is he serious?)

content_img

(USATSI)

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — There’s no way was serious.

Or maybe he was.

There’s no way Price would rule out signing with the Yankees simply because he might need to shave off his beard.

Or maybe he would.

There’s a real chance it won’t matter, anyway. While there’s no chance that the low-budget Rays will sign Price to a long-term contract, it’s veelino. The Sun says the Gunners board are drawing up a list of potential targets to replace Unai Emery after swinging the axe yesterday. One name on the shortlist is 54-year-old Marcelino who was dismissed from Valencia in September. The Spaniard achievry likely that they’ll trade him next winter to a team that can (and will).

It may well be that Pilson is dead against the VAR coming to the Premier League.Wilson was denied a goal in England’s shootout win over Nations League opponents Switzerland.Wilson told Sky Sports: “Obviously I’m disappointed not to score the winner. It’s going to be likerice has little more chance of reaching free agency (he’d be eligible after the 2015 season) than Justin Verlander or Clayton Kershaw do.

Still, there will be a time when Price has more of a choice as to where he plays. So would he really eliminate the Yankees based on their rules against facial hair?

Price tried to do some damage control on Thursday morning, calling the Yankees “the best organization in baseball” and saying anything could happen by the time he becomes a free agent.

More on Spring TrainingRelated linksMore coverage | | |

“That’s three years down the road,” he said. “My hair might fall out by then.”

But a day after to Jon Paul Morosi of Foxsports.com created something of a Twitter and talk-radio firestorm (“I’m hearing the most hateful things,” Price said), what was perhaps most interesting is that Price didn’t really back down.

He didn’t deny saying it. He didn’t deny meaning it.

“I love this thing,” he said, running his fingers across his beard. “It’s not [coming off]. It’s a part of me.”

What’s more, when he started talking about the Yankees, he quickly mentioned that he had never really been a Yankee fan growing up.

“I never ests no formal offer has yet been fielded for their €222m star.Leonardo said, “We have not received any offers. But we had, it’s true, very superficial contacts … With FC Barcelona? Yes.”If Neymar has expressed his desires for departure? It’s cleanvisioned myself in pinstripes,” he said, pointing out that while growing up in Tennessee, the Braves and Cubs were the teams that he saw most on television. “They’re a great organization, but I never aspired to be a New York Yankee.”

Look, we’ve all seen how money can change a player’s visions and aspirations (and facial hair). It would be silly to say there’s no way that Price would ever end up with the Yankees, facial-hair regulations or no regulations (and who knows if someday those rules would change).

But here’s why this episode is worth more than just a passing mention:

Unlike Felix Hernandez, he hasn’t signed a long-term deal. Unlike Verlander and Kershaw, he’s unlikely to get it from the team he’s with.

As long as he’s a Ray, deep-pocket teams like the Yankees can dream that Price will be free agent in three years.

For now, Price is saying that those deep pockets won’t be enough to sway him.

“It’s about being comfortable where you play,” he said. “The last thing I want to think is that I’m signing a long-term deal — regardless of the money — and not having the feeling I have here.”

Price knows that making his beard/Yankees feelings public probably wasn’t the best move. He knows why his agent, Bo McKinnis, called him after the story came out (which is why he didn’t return the call).

He also said, “I can’t rule out anybody.”

He’s just prefer a team like the Rays, where manager Joe Maddon’s dress code is simple: “As long as you think you look hot.”

“Beards, earrings, tattoos, we like it all,” Maddon said. We definitely promote individualism around here.”

Price loves it. He’ll love it, for one more season, until the Rays trade him.

“I have my beard for at least another year,” he said

So he would shave it off to go to the Yankees?

No, he didn’t say that. Not at all.

Is he serious?

We might not know for another three years — if then.

The have agreed to sign free-agent catcher , according to CBSSports.com’s Scott Miller. The one-year deal is pending a physical and is worth $7.5 million, repEd Woodward’s public support was “not needed”. Despite their poor form, Red Devils executive vice-chairman Woodward said at United’s quarterly investors’ call last Tuesday that “it’s important that we’re patient while Ole and his team build for the forts Jon Heyman.

Pierzynski, 35, hit .278/.326/.501 with 27 homers, 77 RBI and 68 runs last season in 135 games for the . The 27-homer season appears an outlier, however, as Pierzynski hit only 17 homers combined in 2010-11 and his previous career high in single-season home runs was 18, back in 2005.

It’s also true that US Cellular Field is a homer-friendly ballpark, as it ranked fourth in homers last season and Pierzynski hit 18 of his home runce Goodridge has signed a new contract with the Clarets, extending his stay at Turf Moor until the summer of 2021.Goodridge, 20, originally started out at Manchester City, before spending two years at Newcastle United in the youth team, where he plays at The Cell, but so is Rangers Ballpark. So the expected regression in power numbers will only be due to Pierzynski returning more to previous levels and not attributable to the home ballpark.

Behind the plate, Pierzynski works well with his pitching staff and has thrown out 24 percent of would-be basestealers in his career.

Pay no attention to the weak World Series ratings. Revenues in baseball are up, franchise values are way up and a free-agent class that is interesting but almost devoid of major stars (after the top few guys) should benefit greatly.

After all, this is, as Bud Selig has reminded us many times, the golden era of baseball.

And these guys are the luckiest of all the beneficiaries.

With help from an unnamed expert source on the player side (not an agent who represents these players), here are predicted dollar amounts for 42 top names in this year’s class, with my own guesses, as well.

With a potential bidding war between two big-market crosstown rivals (the two L.A.’s), he stands to be the big winner. My expert has him No. 1, and I agree. Expert: $147 million, 6 years. Me: $150 million, 6 years.

He resurrected his career in after not dealing well with Coors Field. We can rule out , anyway. Expert: $14 million, 2 years. Me: $27 million, 3 years.

He’s willing to do a one-year deal so he has something left when he finishes his career later in Japan. The Yankees should be able to make a deal here after giving him the $13.3-million qualifying offer. Expert: $14 million, 1 year. Me:sted in the vacant Newcastle job.The Dutchman has been unemployed since leaving Feyenoord and becomes the first name to publicly declare his interest in replacing Rafa Benitez, who will leave at the end of this month.”I think the rumours have come a $15 million, 1 year.

He consistently outpitches his stuff, though he had a bit of injury trouble last year. Expert: $10.25 million, 1 year. Me: $20 million, 2 years.

He resurrected his career once with the Yankees. Maybe the Giants make a play this time. Expert: $11 million, 1 year. Me: $10 million, 1 year.

His huge postseason should make him coveted. Expert: $11 million, 2 years. Me: $18 million, 3 years.

Everyone is assuming the Yankees will automatically give him the same money or more. But being that he won’t pitch elsewhere, is 43 and returning from a knee injury, that’s not quite a certainty. Expert: $10 million, 1 year. Me: $12 million, 1 year.

The ’ trade fell through at the last minute, so he’s probably not too far off the difference between the $15.5-million option and $3.5-million option. Expert: $10 million, 1 year. Me: $20 million, 2 years.

Nice solid starter is better than you think. Expert: $10 million, 2 years. Me: $14 million, 2 years.

An off year offensively could hurt him. But his ability to play first base or DH helps. The Red Sox, who have eyed him for years, make sense. Expert: $9 million, 1 year. Me: $16 million, 2 years.

Higher powers or Giant powers? Either way, San Francisco halfway to another World Series crown

SAN FRANCISCO — Some things they planned. Some they didn’t.Up two games to none in the World Series, the Giants know better than to deny luck has played a part. We know better than to think it’s all luck. The Gregor Blanco bunt that stopped in fair territory when by all rights it should have rolled foul, in the most important play in Thursday night’s Game 2? Luck. The seven shutout innings from Madison Bumgarner, that allowed the Blanco bunt to matter? Not luck. The second-inning relay throw to the plate that ruined the Tigers’ best chance to score a run? Mostly not luck.

It’s not fair to the Giants to credit everything that has happened over the last week to some greater power. It’s not fair to the powers of truth to deny that some absolutely nutty things have helped bring the Giants to where they are now, two wins from what would be their second title in three years. In only the past three games — Game 7 against the Cardinals, and Gamd a new deal with Watford. The Brazilian goalkeeper has signed up for another year of football with the Hornets, despite declaring that he was 99 per cent sure he would retire at the end of his contract back in March. “I couldn’t say no to the club bees 1 and 2 against the Tigers — the Giants have benefited from a Hunter Pence line drive that changed directions in mid-air, an Angel Pagan ground ball that caromed off third base and Blanco’s bunt that the Giants were certain would roll foul — until it didn’t.”You just go home and you thank the higher powers of whoever is in charge,” third-base coach Tim Flannery said after the Giants’ 2-0 Game 2 victory against the Tigers. “And try not to piss the others off.”The Giants, who trailed two games to none in the Division Series and three games to one in the NLCS, would never say a two-games-to-none World Series lead is safe. But with their two most consistent starting pitchers — Ryan Vogelsong and Matt Cain — set to pitch the next two games in Detroit on Saturday and Sunday, it would be crazy not to say they’re feeling pretty good. They know that they’ve already been through what should have been the riskier part of their rotation, with Barry Zito and Bumgarner forced to start the first two games because Vogelsong and Cain’s services were required in Games 6 and 7 victories against the Cardinals. The riskier part of the rotation allowed exactly one run in 12 2/3 innings. Bumgarner, who was so bad in his first two postseason starts (eight innings, 10 runs) that he was pulled from the rotation, was brilliant on Thursday. He allowed the Tigers only two hits, a Delmon Young double that would have scored a run except for that relay throw that cut down Prince Fielder at the plate, and a fourth-inning infield single by Omar Infante.Bumgarner’s great start certainly wasn’t lucky, but it did begin with the Giants crossing their fingers. Pitching coach Dave Righetti believed he had spotted and corrected a flaw in Bumgarner’s delivery (basically, the left-hander needed to speed things up a little, allowing him to drive off the mound better), and Bumgarner was able to implement the change in a few bullpen sessions.”It speaks volumes about Madison,” Vogelsong said. “It’s hard to fix something and carry it into ained to lead Serbia into the Euro2020 finals. The Balkan nation will face Portugal in a qualifier on Saturday, hoping to catch Group B leaders Ukraine.”We see every success as euphoric, and every failure as a tragedy,” Matic said. “We have such a ment game. Not only that, but into a big game. He was off pretty bad [before]. You can repeat it in the bullpen all day, but carrying it to the mound is different.”Hats off to him. Quite honestly, I don’t think I’d have been able to do that.”Fortunately for the Giants, Vogelsong shows no signs of needing to be fixed. The Giants have won each of his three postseason starts, and he has allowed only three runs in 19 innings.Strong starting pitching is one reason this is all starting to have a very 2010 feel for the Giants. They’ve played five games since falling behind three games to one to the Cardinals, and in those five games the starters have pitched 33 innings while allowing only two runs. The cumulative score in those five games: Giants 30, Cardinals/Tigers 4.Pretty hard to argue that’s all luck.Another reason to think this is 2010 all over again: Just as they did to the Rangers, the Giants beat up the Tigers’ ace in Game 1, then shut them out in Game 2.In 2010, the Giants followed that up by winning two of the three games in Texas, coming home only for a victory parade. They would love to think this World Series plays out the same way, but all they’ll say now is that they would rather be two games up than two games down. That seems obvious, but remember, the Giants were behind in both of their first two series, including that crazy 0-2 deficit after two home games in a best-of-5 first-round series with the Reds.”0-2? No, that would not be recommended,” Jeremy Affeldt said. “Statistically, it’s probably better to be 2-0 than 0-2.”Statistically, he would be right. Teams that have gone up two games to none have won the World Series nearly 80 percent of the time (41 times out of 52).Logically, he would be right, too. But not all of what has happened to the Giants the past few days has followed any logic.”I’ve never been one to say luck had a lot to do with what happens,” Vogelsong said. “I think you make your own luck. But we’ve had a lot go our way.”The Blanco bunt was the biggest thing that went their way Thursday. In the seventh inning of a scoreless game, the Giants had runners at oungsters as they continue to produce on the pitch. The likes of Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham are starting to reward Frank Lampard’s faith in their talent. With Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ruben Loftus-Cheek to come into the team, Cascarino believes the Blfirst and second with no outs. Blanco, the Giants’ best bunter, had a 3-1 count after taking three close pitches and fouling off one bunt attempt. His next bunt went a few feet down the third-base line. It stayed on the dirt, and at AT&T Park, that invariably means it’s bound to roll foul.”That was unbelievable,” said Blanco, who crossed first base and pumped his fist as if he had driven in the winning run. “As soon as I bunted it, I was thinking, ‘Oh my God, it’s going to go foul.’ “Flannery, in the third-base coaching box, was thinking the same thing.”You always have to keep the ball on the grass here, or it will roll off foul,” he said. “I don’t know if it was the rain or what, but it didn’t. As soon as he bunted it, I hoped someone would grab it, because I thought it was going foul.”Tigers catcher Gerald Laird thought the same thing and let it roll — and then watched helplessly as it stopped in fair territory. The Giants had the bases loaded with no outs, and when Brandon Crawford followed with a double-play grounder, the Giants had the only run they would really need. That was true thanks in large part to Bumgarner — and also to that relay that was mostly skill, with perhaps a touch of Giants luck mixed in.Bumgarner had begun the second inning by hitting Fielder with a pitch. Young followed with a shot down the left-field line, and when it took a bounce off the side wall, Tigers third-base coach Gene Lamont sent Fielder to try to score the game’s first run.Blanco eventually got the ball in left field and fired it in. He overthrew Crawford, the first cutoff man, and the ball went to Marco Scutaro, the second cutoff man.”I don’t know what Scoot was doing there,” Blanco said. “Thank God he was there.”Luck?”[Blanco] is an outfielder, he doesn’t know,” Scutaro said. “I’m supposed to be there.”In any case, Scutaro took the ball and made a strong throw to catcher Buster Posey, whose swipe tag caught Fielder’s back just before Fielder’s foot touched the plate. Had Fielder slid away from the throw, he no doubt would have been safe. But he didn’t.Saved from the early run, Bumgarner got stronger.”That was huge,” Bumgarner said. “I think that might have been a momentum shifter for me.”It was huge, but it didn’t win the game all by itself, because the Giants still had to score a run, and for six innings against Doug Fister, they couldn’t. Without the bunt that stopped, maybe they don’t score in the seventh inning, either.Luck? Or maybe just a sign that this is all supposed to happen for the Giants?”As the great Carlos Santana — guitar player, not catcher — said in 2010, sometimes you have to know when to get out of the way of yourself,” Flannery said. The Giants are doing that very well. The Giants are basically doing everything very well. No, it’s not all luck. But even the Giants would tell you, it’s not all according to plan, either.

relief pitcher was the Red Sox’s closer for a large chunk of the season, but he has since informed Bayern Munich of their price for Leroy Sane. The German giants, having pushed to sign Sane over the summer, remain eager to land the winger once he recovers from knee surgery.Sane is expected to be back in full-scale training by February.BIL lost that job. Instead, he seems to have taken on a new role: Designated loser.

Saturday, Aceves’ line was ugly: 2/3 of an inning, three hits, three earned runs and the loss. His terrific example for the club’s young players. The 31-year-old penned a new contract with the Red Devils on Wednesday.”Juan is the ultimate professional and one of the most intelligent players I have worked with,’ said the United manager.”He is a grearecent exploits, however, are even uglier.

Anyway, here’s the stat of the day. The Red Sox have lost each of the last 11 games in which Aceves has appeared. That’s right. Beginning Aug. 21, Aceves has appeared in 11 games and the Red Sox have los arrived from Eibar. He told Marca: “I won’t suffer, it was a basic element of play at Eibar. Thanks to that and the team, I developed a lot as a player. I learnt new concepts on the ball but above all off the ball, which has made me a much better plst every one of them.

During that span, Aceves has a 9.87 ERA. This season, Aceves has 10 losses and eight blown saves with a 5.31 ERA.

Considering that, , it’s hard to see how Aceves still has a job.
