Shaq spent eight seasons with the Lakers (1996-2004), leading them to three championships. He was named MVP once as a Laker (2000), Finals MVP three times (2000, 2001, 2002) and an All-Star seven times.

NBA Finals: Heat, Spurs trade blows in the first half as stars establish

content_img

MIAMI — If the first half of Game 1 is any indication for how the 2013 NBA Finals are going to play out, we’re in for his selection of Chelsea veteran Olivier Giroud.Giroud has played just 211 minutes for Chelsea this season, with Tammy Abraham the first-choice striker at Stamford Bridge. But, ahead of Thursday’s Euro 2020 qualifier with Moldova in Paris, Deschamps an incredible treat over the next couple weeks. The lead 52-49 after the first 24 minutes and it’s every bit close as the score says.

The game of runs certainly ran all over the court as the jumped out to a 9-2 lead with great execution, only to have it erased in the blink of an eye with creating a couple of baskets for his team. and Dwyane Wade have both been initiating the offense pretty well by attacking the middle. Parker has turned a lot of opportunities into shots around the basket or assists to his teammates, while Wade has been aggressive at overpowering his defenders.

The Heat seem intent on going inside on whichever wing player (Dwyane Wade or ) is being defended by . LeBron James has she will teach Jefferson Lerma to avoid “needless bookings”.The Colombian grabbed his fourth booking out of seven Premier League games in Saturday’s draw with West Ham United. He told the Daily Echo: “Saturday’s (foul) he probably didn’t need to do. I truggled with his jumper, going just 1 for 4 from outside the restricted area in the first half, but he’s gotten to the basket for shot attempts five times and is filling up the stat sheet as he normally does. His eight rebounds and five assists are team highs for the Heat and his 10 points are right behind Wade’s 13.

The key for the Spurs has been letting counter by filling up the stat sheet too and weathering the storm when Duncan picked up a second foul right before the second quarter. With Duncan out of the game for the end of the first quarter and the first four minutes of the second quarter, Miami extended the lead to nine points, but San Antonio instantly cut that to two points in under two minutes of Duncan’s return.

Duncan finished the first half with 12 points (on 12 shots), nine rebounds and four assists. Both teams are hitting 40 percent of their 3-pointers so far and have just four combined turnovers in this game. Wolves’ Kevin Love re-fractured his right hand

content_img

The announced Saturday that forward has re-fractured the third metacarpal on his right hand.

Love injured the hand Thursday in the third quarter during a win against the Denver Nuggets. It’s hard to see exactly how, but it appeared he hit Andre Iguodala’s arm.

Initially, the diagnosis was a sprained finger, but after Love checked out he didn’t return to the game.

Love will be examined by Dr. Andy Weiland, a hand specialist at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, later this week. The team says following that, an update will be provided, which will likely include a timetable.

His original injury didn’t require surgery, but if it’s determined he needs it this time around, his timetable could be more lengthy.

The first injury occurred prior to the season as Love fractured his third and fourth metacarpal doing knuckle push-ups. He was out just less than five weeks. The originSCR Altach will be a good test.Saints have spent the week in Austria.”I think the first test is not really something that gives us a message for the future, but it’s important after a week of hard work that we have a chance to play two halves, with mal timetable given was six to eight weeks.

Assuming Love is out for at least a moderate amount of time, the Wolves are back in a familiar position of trying to figure out how to replace the production of their most important player. Though Love hadn’t found his shooting stroke this season, he still is leading the Wolves in last month, it has been revealed. Now in charge of St Etienne, Puel was wanted by Milan as a replacement for Marco Giampaolo ahead of them appointing Stefano Pioli.France Football says Puel was the favoured option for Milan chief exec Ivan Gazidis.Ho scoring (18.3 points), rebounds (14.0) and double-doubles (14). And that’s in playing only 18 games.

But Love has struggls heating up.Newcastle United opened talks with ASM for the France international earlier this week, but L’Equipe says they’re not the lone English club in contact.West Ham and Crystal Palace are also in talks for Sidibe. And Monaco are prepared to seled shooting the ball, hitting only 35.2 percent from the floor and an anemic 21.7 percent from 3. Compare that to last season where Love shot an impressive 37.2 percent from 3 and was the 3-point champ at All-Star Weekend. So it’s safe to say a broken shooting hand can have an impact on your shooting performance.

Which of course begs the question of how Love will respond when he returns from this latest fracture. And will he be able to recapture his form in time for the Wolves to make a playoff push?

Without Love — or Ricky Rubio for that matter — the Wolves patched their way to a 5-4 start with Derrick Williams starting in Love’s place, and are 6-5 overall this season without their All-Star forward. Currently, Minnesota sits at 15-14 and just a half-game out of eighth in the West.

So the Wolves will again have to find a way to keep their head above water for a while until Love returns. At least they know they’ve done it before.

NBA store sells Dwight Howard ‘loyalty’ t-shirt

“Loyalty” t-shirts. (NBA.com) Maybe this is hipster irony at its finest. But probably this is just really stupid. a t-shirt with an image of All-Star center Dwight Howard in his Orlando Magic jersey with the word “loyalty” and the team’s logo superimposed across the chest. The shirt is priced at $21.99 and sold with the following pitch: “Show your undying loyalty to your hoops fave when you wear the adidas Orlando Magic Dwight Howard t-shirt. This short-sleeve tee displays screenprinted and player graphics on the front.”Howard used the word when he decided to opt in to the 2012-2013 season of his contract with the Magic back in March. “I’m loyal,” Howard said at a press conference announcing his decision, . “It’s been very hard. We’re talking a career-changing event. Most people don’t see that. I’m very loyal and I’ was delighted with the praise he received from Pep Guardiola.Speaking before Saturday’s wker will team up with Chelsea for pre-season, after initially joining in January from Borussia Dortmund before returning to the German side on loan for the remainder of this campaign. “It feels amazing and I’m super excited to get started with Chelsein over West Ham United, Guardiola said that the England under-17 captain was an option for him at centre-back this season.“It’s a pleasure [to be mentioned bve always put loyalty above anything.” Those statements were , including from Miami Heat All-Star guard Dwyane Wade.Of course, Howard’s pledge of “loyalty” came after Howard refused to sign a long-term extension, publicly requested a trade in December and then put the franchise through a wild week of indecision, in which he couldn’t decide whether or not to opt in while the Magic explored trade options right up until the deadline. Then, in April, Howard denied reports that he wanted his former coach, Stan Van Gundy, to be fired just minutes after Van Gundy himself . In May, after the Magic were bounced out of the first round of the playoffs after Howard underwent back surgery, the team elected to and part ways with GM Otis Smith after that Howard wanted both gone.  indicated that Howard planned to request a trade again this summer.Los determined to make a big impression at Liverpool this season. The Liverpool man missed out on last year’s title race and wants to play a key part in this campaign to make up for it.The 26-year-old told Liverpoolfc.com: “It’s on me to try to bring yalty can be a complicated concept with many definitions but this shirt is pretty incomprehensible.

Offseason Report: New Orleans Pelicans

content_img

Over the next month, CBSSports.com’s Eye On Basketball will take a team-by-team look at the 2013 NBA offseason. We continue with the .

How they finished 2013

Certainly not ideal, but by no means a disaster.

OK, the playoff talk was a pipedream. Fans should have seen that very early on. But the Pelicans, then the Hornets, were by no means a disaster. They did what they needed to, which was show where the strengths and weaknesses were, show that when healthy, can still produce, that is the monster that was expected, that the team needed a new core of defensive players.

They struggled fiercely on the defensive end, which drove Monty Williams crazy. Gordon did have health issues, and for half the year looked like he was still feuding with the organization over the decision to match his offer sheet in restricted free agency. But when he played, he was great at times.

Grievis Vasquez was better than expected, but showed severe flaws as a starting point guard defensively. Al Farouq Aminu looked promising, but too raw offensively.

In a lot of ways they were kind of where they were expected to be. A rebuilding team that was nowhere near a finished product.

Offseason needs

They needed to figure out whether was a starter or not. They needed to establish what their long-term solutions for a frontcourt logjam would be. They could use a small forwards solution of some kind. They also needed to come up with some set of players who could consistently defend.

And they needed to find a polite, quiet way to bury for a while and let him simmmer.

Maybe their biggest undertaking though, was integrating their new name and brand, the Pelicans, and getting writers like me to stop calling them the Hornets, which I did as recently as the email saying I was writing this piece. So there’s that.

The Draft

And here’s where things got nuts.

So there the Pelicans were at No.6. And the pick came down, Nerlens Noel. There was much rejoicing in the streets. Anthony Davis and Noel! Two U2-plane-long wingspans under the age of 22 to destroy shots for years! A new twin towers in New Orleans! Pelican wings for days!

But then the trade. They weren’t getting Noel. They were getting… ?

And chaos broke loose. The Pelicans traded the No. 6 pick, Nerlens Noel, and a 2014 first-round pick (top-three protected) to Philadelphia for Holiday. It wasberson admits he’s a huge fan of Gremio star Everton Soares. The striker has helped Brazil reach the Copa America final and has been linked with Manchester United and Manchester City.Kleberson told YourPromotionalcode.co.uk: “Everton from Gremio is the sacrifice of the mightly concept of upside for the sure thing, an All-Star caliber point guard. And make no mistake, Holiday’s All-Star inclusion was legit.

Holiday gives them a long-term solution at point guard without the defensive issues of Vasquez. Holiba.Tuttosport says Pogba is the first man on Sarri’s wish list if the Chelsea boss takes over at Juventus. The 60-year-old wants to bring Pogba back to Turin from United to partner the likes of Aaron Ramsey and Cristiano Ronaldo.Real Madrid want Pogbaday may be the best defensive point guard in the league and took huge leaps forward last year offensively. He’s not a superstar, but he is a star, and he fits very well with er Kyle Walker states that it was an easy decision for him to sign a new contract with the club.Walker renewed his deal with the English champions, committing him to City until 2024.Despite the club being in the market for right back Joao Cancelo froGordon. You saw an immediate change in Gordon’s attitude after that trade.

So that was draft night. They also picked up from the Blazers… when they traded . Withey is a player you have to see if he contributes in a regular season setting to know if he’s any good at the level. The Pelicans also acquired Pierre Jackson out of Baylor, but he’s headed overseas.

Free agency and trades

So the Holiday move was their big shocking move. But that wasn’t the only voltage they were handing out. The Pelicans surprised everyone by getting involved early and heavy with the pursuit of , eventually signing him to a massive offer sheet which the did not match, accepting a sign-and-trade where they got Vasquez.

So you have Jrue Holiday, starter, Eric Gordon, starter, and Tyreke Evans, starter. Do you play him at the 3? Do you bring him off the bench? That’s the idea, with Evans in a sixth man role, but that’s a lot of money to spend on a sixth man. You can play all three together, but you can also use Evans as the primary ball-handler. On one hand, it’s extremely versatile in concept. On the other, it can be extremely convoluted in a practical sense. Making this work will be Monty Williams’ biggest challenge next season.

The Pelicans also brought back who showed a lot on both ends last season and was quietly a very promising player.

New Orleans snagged on the cheap, giving them one veteran center left who can play, and , giving them a super-shooter on the cheap. Two smart signings with a loaded team up front to add depth.

Overall grade and accomplishments: B

This could be an A+, it could be an F. That’s true for all ‘ offseasons, but it’s even more pronounced with New Orleans. The Holiday trade was a big gamble. The Evans signing, gamble. Trading Vasquez and Lopez? Gamble gamble. They’re banking everything on a very unorthodox lineup and hoping to find lightning in a bottle. If they can defend, it’ll look like a great summer. If they can’t, then it’s a logjammed mess.

So instead we’ll go B. The Pelicans got talent. Does it fit? It can, but it’s going to take bold vision and dedication from both the coaching staff and the young players developing.

The Pelicans have placed their bet. We’ll see if they land somewhere promising or find themselves lost at sea.

Grade the Trade: Suns get Emeka Okafor, Wizards get Marcin Gortat

content_img

The and the have , along with some other moving parts in the deal. This is a pretty big move for a Wizards team looking to finally break back into the playoffs, where the Suns are busy acquiring assets to help continue their rebuilding project.

How did the two teams come outr Cup, despite losing on penalties.Looking to bounce back after a 4-0 loss to Manchester United at the weekend, Chelsea began the game impressively. They took the lead through Olivier Giroud, but Liverpool bounced back in the second half.Extra time en in the deal? Let’s grade the trade:

was a huge part of the Wizards’ success in 2012-13. That may sound funny considering this team was a disaster before returned to action and gave the franefender Stefano De Vrij is enjoying preseason under new coach Antonio Conte.De Vrij helped Inter beat Lugano 2-1 on Sunday, with Conte getting off to a winning start in preseason.”Things are going very well, we’re working a lot physically and technicchise a shot of adrenaline/competency on the offensive end of the floor, but the Wizards possessed one of the best defenses in the league despite struggling in the first 33 games. It meant that when Wall returned to the offense, they had a baseline of production and execution they could always rely on — the defense.

On the Premier League surprised him.The Blades host West Ham on Friday night.”I didn’t see their success coming in the Premier League, but I should not have been surprised,” Moyes said. “They have come in with momentum and they have all know what iskafor was the anchor of that defense and means a lot to them when he’s healthy. However, Okafor is once again suffering through injury concerns and the Wizards simply aren’t deep enough inside to have to worry about his health. With a disc problem in his neck, their defensive anchor wasn’t reliable and they needed to find someone that could come in and be enough of a presence inside over the course of the full season. With that, they’ve traded for Marcin Gortat, which is a big move for them.

Gortat gives them a healthy, mobile center who can run a pick-and-roll with John Wall while giving them defensive rotations and rebounding on the other end of the floor. He’s by no means as effective as Okafor on defense, but he’s good enough to consider this a stabilizing move for the Wizards.

If they decide to keep the other parts, grabbing some backcourt depth with Shannon Brown is also a nice addition to this Wizards roster. There isn’t as much pressure for someone like Glen Rice, Jr to perform and Washington adds someone that can help them push the pace. Kendall Marshall could end up being someone they develop over time, but there isn’t any pressure to make him be included in the rotation now since they have as the backup. Malcolm Lee will likely be a roster cut casualty in the trade.

Two years ago, the Wizards went away from stockpiling young assets and decided to bring in veterans to help Wall win now. This move solidifies that a bit more now and gives them a center that hasn’t really had much of an injury history.

The Suns’ plan is pretty simple, right? Maintain flexibility and acquire assets to make a splash in the 2014 draft. If the Wizards were a healthy center away from possibly making the playoffs in the East, then you’ve almost guaranteed yourself a middle first round pick by grabbing their selection and helping them get into the playoffs in the meantime. The pick is reportedly top-12 protected. If the Wizards make the playoffs, that’s likely going to put it in the 15 or 16 range.

In this upcoming draft, that’s an incredibly valuable asset for the Suns to use either with a selection or through a trade. They now have four first round picks in the 2014 draft and should be primed to be big movers and shakers in one way or another on draft night. They haven’t added any long-term salary in the process outside of the possible rookie contract and no longer have to wonder if Marshall will develop for them as they groom for the starting point guard duties.

If Okafor gets healthy, they have an expiring contract of a good defensive center they can move before or at the deadline to acquire more assets. This move seems like a win-win for both sides.

“John’s examination today showed improvement in his stress injury that will allow him to begin ramping up his activity level,” Dr. David Altchek said in a statement released by the team Friday.

Wall has missed all 19 of the Wizards’ games this season because of a stress injury to his left knee. In late September he was ruled out for 8-12 weeks. It’s been almost exactly 12 weeks.

The Heat don’t care.

Tuesday night’s matchup between New York and Miami could be viewed as an opportunity to make a statement against the . The Knicks blasted the Heat in their first two meetings and were up 16 in the second half of their third matchup. But what happened in the second half of that game is apparently what matters to Miami. They went on a huge run, and eventually won the game with a little bit of room to spare.

via  reports, analysis, notes, news, trade talk — Heat Zone, a PalmBeachPost.com blog.

This in itself sends a signal. The Heat feel they have no reason to play all-out vs. the Knicks now that they don’t have to worry about their seeding. There’s no message they feel they need to send. There’s no rivalry these guys want to be a part of. The big dogs outside of Bosh will rest.

That’s not to say the Heat have no shot here. They just beat the Spurs on a three (though the Spurs were missing guys of their own). It’s just that for all the talk out of the East Coast about the Knicks being contenders, Miami has made a pretty clear statement about it.

They don’t care about the Knicks. They have bigger fish to fry.
