Heat show their late-game superiority again over the Thunder

(Getty Images)

If that’s what Game 6 would have looked like, then it would have been a good one.

But it also means we would have ended with the same result we had in June: the as victors.

In a tight 103-97 Christmas Day win over the that featured a brilliant performance from and a dominating effort from  — just like in Games 1-4 in the Finals — things came down to a series of The transfer deadline for League One and League Two clubs will be extended into September.Teams in the third and fourth tiers have until 17:00 on Monday, 2 September to register permanent or loan deals. However, Championship clubs must still complete their transfer business by the same time on Thursday, 8 August, before the start of the Premier League season.plays the last four minutes.

In the end, the Heat made more, the most obvious being the flawless execution up by one point with 30 seconds left that resulted in an uncontested dunk by . LeBron drew Oklahoma City’s undivided attention and as he tends to do, he made the correct, smart play by dishing to a lonely Bosh in the paint for an easy two points.

More on Thunder-HeatRelated links | More coverage

OKC quickly got it back to one as Durant plugged a jumper, but after two free throws, the Thunder hoisted two threes that went begging and left them without the revenge they so badly wanted.

Instead, they leave Miami feeling the same way they did six months ago: wondering what went wrong and trying to figure out why they lost.

What remains unchanged from the Finals are two big things:

1) The Thunder have a much slimmer margin for error than the Heat do. OKC needs to knock down open looks, take advantage of transition opportunities, make free throws and control tempo. The Thunder have to play their game and not conform to the Heat’s bs spoken about his form this season, and the connection he shares with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The England U21 star has already set up Aubameyang for two goals in the Premier League this season. And he mentioned how working on the timing of his runsruising style. Miami consistently figures out to get complementary help from unexpected sources, while the Thunder end up relying almost exclusively on Westbrook and Durant to manufacture good offense.

2) The Heat make the Thunder play differently. The y midfielder Fernandinho believes he’s managed to improve as a defender. He has been deputising at centre-back to cover for City’s recent injury crisis.Fernandinho told ESPN Brazil: “Well, the difference is that playing as a centre-back I have a sliThunder don’t look like themselves when they play Miami. In the Finals, that was mostly about ’s no-show, but Tuesday night, it was the stagnant isolation, horrible spacing and lack of movement. The Thunder had only 14 assists, with Westbrook doing little creating (three assists). There wasn’t that natural, easy flow to OKC’s offense, which has been the best in the league so far this season. Everything was a struggle, and that’s obviously a credit to Miami.

Oh, and a third thing: Scott Brooks still likes to play . And still kills OKC.

It’s just a December game, and things change between now and June. But if the Thunder are planning on dethroning the Heat in a Finals rematch, they’re going to have to do something different. It’s pretty clear that just “playing your game” isn’t really getting it done. Like last June, Scott Brooks again stubbornly stuck with Perkins in key situations, refusing to match Miami’s small-ball lineup. It’s a curious, head-scratching decision that almost everyone universally agrees on, except Brooks.

But that’s an easy scapegoat as to why the Heat made a few more critical plays and topped the Thunder again. Point at Perkins, point at a few questionable calls — or no-calls — point at good fortune in unexpected role players stepping up.

Maybe it’s a much simpler, clearer reality: The Heat still are just better.

I thought maybe that was the biggest play of the game.””Dwyane made an unbelievable block on Brandon Bass, one of the all-time great blocks,” Heat forward said. “You make an incredible effort and you can’t close off the possession. It becomes a deflating play for us. That summed up our night.”That might have seemed like merely a bad break for Miami. But then it happened again. Minutes later, Pietrus hit another three with no defender in sight, fed this time by Celtics forward . The triple put Boston ahead 85-83 with 2:11 remaining; the Heat wouldn’t lead again. In between, Rondo secured another offensive rebound and putback, two more points Miami gave up down the stretch without so much as troubling Boston.”The game came down to some offensive rebounds and some loose balls that led to open shots for them,” Wade said. “They beat us to the 50-50 balls and that was the difference.””It’s just the will,” Rondo said. “I think I just try to find a way to get us the will to win.”As Boston piled its points with steady guile, Miami degenerated into a one-man show after plenty of the same old bad habits re-surfaced for the Heat: role players missing open jumpers, the stars standing and settling too often, turnovers and low-percentage shots killing possessions. Boston switched in and out of zone to discourage Miami to avoid paint penetration. With James shooting 1 for 9 during the third quarter, Wade took the mantle of primary playmaker during the fourth, scoring 14 points of his 27 points in the final period. But that approach left James spotting up on the perimeter or struggling to get free while rolling to the hoop. James’ only points in the final eight minutes of a back-and-forth game came courtesy of a free lay-up that Boston, ahead by four with nine seconds left, conceded so as not to foul. The points were a gift to a man in desperate need of them. They were also a tease, as Celtics forward  hit two ensuing free throws to finish off the win. The NBA’s MVP managed to get to the foul line just twice in the fourth quarter. His only field goal attempt besides his final minute gimme lay-up was a contested catch-and-shoot 3-pointer, which rimmed off. James finished with a game-high 30 points and 13 rebounds but he posted just two assists to three turnovers in 45 minutes. But his wages of £125,000-a-week are or less than fully engaged on crucial late offensive possessions. He didn’t check out. But his switch wasn’t flipped all the way on, either. Miami needed him.Instead, the closing minutes saw Chalmers and both miss late threes. The Heat finished 3 for 11 outside the paint in the fourth quarter.”They made us stagnant offensively and got stops,” James said. “We couldn’t get anything to go offensively.” That stagnancy was the opposite of Miami’s early offense, which was more active and benefited from the return of Bosh, who played limited minutes off the bench but was able to spark the crowd with an offensive rebound and putback. Spoelstra elected to sit Bosh, who finished with nine points and seven rebounds in 14 minutes, in the fourth quarter.”I didn’t think it would necessarily be fair to him to throw him in with three minutes to go,” Spoelstra explained.”I was ready,” Bosh said. “If he felt it wasn’t fair, then that’s great. I think we still had enough to win the game.”Ready or not, Bosh didn’t move like himself. He was effective but far from 100 percent. Boston made a strong third quarter push with him on the court so it wasn’t an egregious decision to leave him on the bench. But perhaps the floor-spacing and vision that Spoelstra has so enthusiastically praised over the last two weeks could have been helpful during the late-game slow down. And what does “fair” have to do with anything? The technical fouls, the offensive toil, the step-too-late energy plays, the standing and watching, the absence of Bosh. They all combined to let Boston hang around, but there was one last miscalculation that sealed it.With just under a minute remaining, James switched on to Celtics forward Paul Pierce, who worked the shot clock outside the 3-point line. Anticipating a drive, James edged off ever so slightly, giving Pierce  right in his face. The shot put Boston up two possessions.”You kind of play on instincts,” Pierce, who finished with 19 points, four rebounds and four assists, said. “I saw him back up. He gave me a step. I knew it was within my range. The shot clock was winding down. Just took a shot. That’s just being in those moments so many times an understanding what your team needs.”He continued: “I thought that was the best shot. Once I saw him back up, then I was able to knock it down.” Why back off? James was not in foul trouble. One of the league’s elite perimeter defenders didn’t need to worry about Pierce, playing at less than 100 percent, taking him hard off the dribble. Anyway, the Heat’s team defense was assembled behind him. There was no good reason to grant daylight. And yet it happened. It was one final, minor error. A play that was off by a fraction. But there were just too many plays that were off, just too many decisions that were lacking. Just too much playing back on the heels or with feet flat.”I never thought we would be in this situation,” Wade said of Boston’s series lead. “We have to play a great Game [6], as close to perfection as possible.”There are just so many small things to get right and so little margin for error. Perfection seems so far away.

Jameer Nelson says ‘Superman’ is no longer his favorite superhero

(Getty Images)

has had ‘s back for years. The point guard and All-Star center were teammates, and friends. Even last year, when Howard was incessantly talking about playing with other, better point guards despite Nelson having logged an All-Star season with the big man during the Magic’s final run, Nelson wouldn’t say negative things about Howard. He took all of it. The Dwightmare, the distractions, the questioning of his talent, the dismantling of a season, the impediment to his career.

Howard’s gone. And while Nelson is still taking the high road, in an interview with Magic.com, he made it clear that things are different for Nelson as far as his relationship with him. Nelson was asked who his favorite superhero is.

“Well,’’ Nelson said as he paused for effect, “it used to be Superman, but not anymore.”

Nelson talked more about the nonsense last year.

`”It was just one of those things from [Howard] that I never did understand, and I guess some things just aren’t meant for you to understand,’’ Nelson said. “I just took the approach to play basketball wherever I was. I knew that I was still in last year for a reason and that the organization still wanted me here. Really, that helped me kind of get over all of the nonsense that was going around.”

via .

Nelson was given a new contract this summer, and I can’t say I think it was a smart move. His efficiency has been dragging as he has gotten older, and the team needs to invest in a full rebuild. Honestly, Nelson is a little too good for what the Magic need. But you can’t deny his loyatly to the city and the team, and the fact that in the face of things that would make a lot of players check out and start running their mouth, he has just done his job. He stuck by Howard, who he said was his friend.

But as the players are constantly reminded daily in the league, this is a business. And just for the owners and management who sign them, teta has already made a big difference at Arsenal. The Gunners have not won in Arteta’s first two games in charge, which included a home loss to Chelsea on Sunday. But Aubameyang is confident the Spaniard is making some positive changes.”We need to mak trade them, waive them, but also for each individual player, especially the stars out for themselves.

Kevin Durant: ‘My time is now’

(Getty Images)

There has always been a distinct humility about Kevin Durant. He’s always heaped praise on teammates and coaches and never himself. He’s always deflected questions about his superstardom to something else.pez have been rewarded with their first professional contracts for the club.Arsenal under-18s were crowned champions of the U-18 Premier League South last term, with Cottrell and Lopez playing integral roles, while Hillson signed on loan during the s

More on Oklahoma City ThunderRelated links More coverage

Durant has gone so far with it that often it’s almost reached an annoying level. Like, “Come on man, you’ve got to know you’re good.” The humility is genuine. It’s real. Kevin Durant may be playing “Kevin Durant” in his new movie, but he’s no actor in real life. He’s a kind, genuine, unselfish and humble person.

But he’s dropping a bit of that aw shucks manner and finally taking ownership of rise to the NBA’s Mount Rushmore of current stars.

“I’ve heard a few times, in three or four years, this league is going to be yours. . . . I don’t like that. Because I think I’m established now. My time is now,” . “I feel as though I’ve proved myself these last five years that I can be one of the top players in the league. I’ve got a long way to go to being the ultimate best, but I think my time is now. And I’m starting to enter my prime.”

That’s quite a departure from a guy that and even .

Maybe it’s because he reached the near pinnacle of the game by playing in the Finals last season. Maybe it’s because he was the go-to scorer on one of the greatest teams ever in the Olympics this summer. Maybe it’s because of the All-Star appearances, the scoring titles, the All-, and on and on. Maybe he’s finally figuring out what we’ve all known for a while.

Or maybe he’s finally just ready to admit it.

“I always felt that I belonged on top with those guys and I just have to continue to keep working to maintain that,” Durant said. “It feels good to be a part of a great group of guys, to do something special for the country. We all respected each other and they never looked at me as the younger guy coming up and waiting his turn. They were just, ‘Go out there and play, do what you do.’ And that’s what I did.”

Durant said in the article that he’his move to Real Madrid. The departing Flamengo attacker’s transfer was confirmed this morning. Real are paying €30m in total for the 18 year-old, with 80 per cent going to the club and the remaining 20 per cent being shared by the agents and familys felt that way about himself since really the 2011 All-Star Game in Los Angeles, but hasn’t ever really opened up about it because “I don’t like to talk about myself, but I had to get that out there.”

Don’t confuse Durant’s change in tone though. There’s a difference between humility and confidence. And Durant has never lacked in the latter.

It’s true though. It’s time for Durant and his Thunder. Despite nearly taking the trophy last season his team is still one of the youngest in the league. Doesn’t matter to him though. He said after beating the Spurs in the Western Conference finals lasts season that he never bought into the thought that he and the Thunder needed to wait their turn. They’re in a hurry to win. They don’t have any intention of waiting in line.

The road seemingly was cleared for a return visit for to the Finals, but the Lakers made waves with their offseason acquisitions. Durant brushed them off a few weeks ago by saying he didn’t care. And while he surely had to at least raise an eyebrow, he’s not worried.

“We all are going to have to compete. I don’t think no team is going to lay down for anybody,” Durant said. “Everybody has got to play and I like our chances.”

The window of opportunity is wide open for Durant and the Thundeob Holding insists Arsenal are not at “crisis point” and is confident they can turn their fortunes around as they head into the festive period. The Gunners have gone five games in all competitions without a win.”We just need to string a couple of winsr. He’s only 23 and while he has an impressive and growing list of accomplishments already to his name, he’s not letting up and until he tracks down that ultimate goal: a championship.

Still, he’s his own man and his own player. He’s always battled against letting his achievements and praise go to his head. He might be willing to accept the fact he belongs in a conversation with LeBron James and Kobe Bryant now, but he’s no different internally.

Kevin Durant isn’t willing to wait. He’s not operating on anyone else’s timetable. He’s not going to hold off until someone hands him the reigns to the league.

He wants to take it. Now.

Jason Kidd says it’s possible Deron Williams could miss season opener

“But we’re not rushing him. So if we have to start the season with him still trying to get better, I think we all feel comfortable, but we would feel a little bit more comfortable if he was starting.”

Now that’s a possibility, far from a lock, so no need to slam that owards a move to Atletico Madrid. The 22 year-old has announced he is leaving Brazil next month for Europe – and Atletico are favourites to land him courtesy of a first refusal option – which was secured during their deal for Renan Lodi.Bruno said on panic button yet, Nets fans. Kidd said earlier in the week that Williams would miss the next three preseason games after their opener against Washington. Initially, . In a week’s time, the timetable has doubled. But again, so far this is just a veteran missing preseason time, something that happens a lot with a nagging injury like an ankle.

The cause for concern? This is the same injury that limited Williams l admits that Wales are desperate to get a win against Slovakia in the Euro 2020 qualifiers. The Welsh are hanging on in Group E, as they are in fourth position.Considering they are four points away from Croatia, James knows they cannot slip up any morast season, and forced him to have platelet rich plasma therapy last winter. That treatment, along with three cortasone shots helped him to a significantly better second half of the year, but given that this is an issue dating back over a year, you have to at least be aware of where that panic button is. The Nets simply cannot afford for Williams to be anything less than excellent this year to accomplish their goals.

It’s an ankle, so he could play next suddenly, he could be fine, it could be a month, these things are consistently hard to predict.

For now, we’ll monitor the situation closely and wait for word of Williams’ progress. Williams averaged 19 points and eight assists last season for Brooklyn with the lowest assist percentage (share of teammate field goals assisted upon) since his rookie season.

Video: Kevin Durant picks up 11th technical of season vs. Miami

The new marketing scheme for bills him as “Not Nice.” It’s getting to “Not Smart” territory. Durant picked up his 11th technical of the season vs. Miami, tying him with… wait for it… on the season.

Kevin Durant has the same number of techs as DMC. What is happening?

Here’s what KD did to garner the tech:

From the rulebook:

A technical foul shall be assessed for unsportsmanlike tactics such as:(1) Disrespectfully addressing an official(2) Physically contacting an official(3) Overt actions indicating resentment to a call(4) Use of profanity(5) A coach entering onto the court without permission of an official(6) A deliberately-thrown elbted defender Harry Maguire urged his teammates to build on their 4-1 rout of Newcastle United.Although it was a much better display from the weekend, Maguire warned it will count for little if they do not secure a win next time out at Burnley.”The boow or any attempted physical act with no contactinvolved(7) Taunting

So No. 3 is clearly in play here. The new rules implemented last season were designed to punish Taison is angry being blocked from joining AC Milan.Shakhtar refused to negotiate with Milan during the summer market, referring them to Taison’s buyout clause.“Congratulations on ending my dream. Another dream broken,” wrote the 31-year-old on Inplayers for any sort of physical reaction to a call, and slapping the floor definitely counts. He doesn’t have to make it towards the official, any air punch or slap qualifies, and Durant did it here. He’s admitted publicly he has to control himself. He apparently hasn’t gotten a holason. The Spaniard has stepped in as Gary Cahill has struggled for minutes under manager Maurizio Sarri.”Obviously it’s something I’m very proud of,” the Spaniard told Chelsea Magazine. “I already take responsibility on and off the pitch, trying to gid of it yet.

If Durant hits five more in the next three months, he will be suspended a game. Crazy to think that of the normally mild-mannered Durant.

NBA Offseason Report: Toronto Raptors

(Getty Images)

Over the next month, CBSSports.com’s Eye On Basketball will take a team-by-team look at the 2012 offseason. Next up: the . You can .

The Raptors had one of those quietly not-as-disappointing-as-it-appears seasons. The win total was bad, they had no All-Stars, and arguably their most memorable game was ‘s game winner against them. But very quietly, there were significant elements of improvement, particularly at the defensive end. In his first season as head costo Valverde expects big things from Antoine Griezmann.Valverde underlined that the club have high expectations on the former Atletico Madrid forward.”He is a footballer with experience in LaLiga Santander and in that aspect he is more settled than (ach, Dwane Casey instilled both a superior scheme and managed to motivate players into operating within that system, which is always the trickier part. They wound up in the lottery, but for the first time in several seasons, the Raptors seem to be headed in the right direction as an organizatioHarry Maguire.ESPN says United remain undeterred in their pursuit of Maguire despite Leicester demanding £80m for the defender.United hierarchy will back Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the transfer market ahead of his first full season at Old Trafford, butn. presented a dilemma. He wasn’t good enough to build around and they needed an upgrade at point guard, but his contract was just valuable enough to want to keep for best offer and he was too good to drop off in a salary dump. More pressingly, however, they needed an upgrade at small forward. There was a lot of talk before the draft about the Raptors trading out for a veteran small forward, which never materialized. They needed help down low, but had a plan for that after the 2011 draft. The Raptors decided they couldn’t get that veteran small forward upgrade, so instead they opted to draft a wing to augment . They took , who was a sleeper candidate for the draft, but at their spot, it was a bit of a reach. Ross brings athleticism and three-point shooting, but doesn’t have the ability to create off the dribble. Ross has the potential be an excellent fit, but it may take some time for him to develop into the player they need him to be. is a Reggie-Evans mold big who can rebound, but will need time to develop. And here’s where things kind of went nuts. So the Raptors wanted . And the wanted Steve Nash. There were reports the Knicks were going to offer the a sign-and-trade package, including . A few days later, Landry Fields agreed to a four-year, $20 million offer sheet with the Raptors. Steve Nash did not come to the Raptors. Or the Knicks. So the Raptors wound up spending that much on a player who had a good start to his rookie season and then severely regressed. Fields is a player the Raptors genuinely wanted, but the poison pill was probably not part of the necessary plan. It represents a huge mistakee for the Raptors. Even if they had to overpay for Fields, the amount they did was a pretty serious limitation long-term.Theytus over Christian Eriksen. The Tuttosport says Tottenham are keen on revisiting their interest in Paulo Dybala in January and are willing to offer Juventus Eriksen in return.Spurs were strongly linked with a move for the Juventus superstar in the sum did manage to pull in their 2011 draft pick Jonas Valanciunas which represents a huge addition to the club. Valanciunas struggled in the Olympics for Lithuania’s Olympic team. But he should develop into a solid defensive center who can also function in the pick and roll. And then, when it looked like they wouldn’t be making any big additions, the trade. With deciding he and Kevin McHale just weren’t going to work out, and with the collecting assets for a trade (or something else), the Raptors swooped in and snagged a near-All-Star point guard for just a draft pick and filler. It was a coup of a trade for Bryan Colangelo, and the result is a vastly upgraded Raptors squad. Lowry should make the Raptors better on both sides of the ball, pressuring the ball defensively and working in the pick and pop with Bargnani and pick and roll with Valanciunas. It gives them their best player, and any time you can pick up the best player on your team for a first-round pick, that’s a win. B-Without the Fields deal, this is a B+ to an A. But Fields is such a drastic overpay, and even if Nash had nothing to do with it, that makes it worse because they simply overvalued the player on the market. The money’s one thing, the years is a whole other bag. But they did get Kyle Lowry, drafted what should be a good player in time, didn’t do anything drastic, and added Valanciunas. The Raptors turned over a lot of their roster, but they also got better. The plan under Dwane Casey is working.
