Kobe posts statement on Facebook about Lakers’ firing of Mike Brown

Obviously there’s an assumption Mike Brown’s firing came at the hands of ‘s clear frustration with the team.

. Bryant completely dismissed that, which fell in line with everything he said and did publicly in regards to Brown. He was always supportive and never passed any blame in Brown’s direction.

expressing support for Brown and going out of his way not to tson is desperate to add trophy to his cabinet. The Reds can win the Community Shield by beating Manchester City on Sunday.”I don’t think I’ll ever tire of playing at Wembley,” said the England international in an interview for the official match proghrow his fotal support from teammates after Sunday’s clash at Everton.Son was left distraught after Andre Gomes suffered a fracture dislocation of his right ankle after being tripped by the South Korean star. “He’s really shaken up,” said Davies, who was Totormer coach under the bus.

Tough day. I’ve they will travel to Portugal for a friendly on Tuesday 8 October, three days after facing Brazil at Middlesbrough. As Euro 2021 hosts, Phil Neville’s side will not play any competitive fixtures before the tournament gets under way.The match in Portugaseen coaches as well as friends come and go. No matter how many years I’ve been playing, it’s still hard to deal with. I had a good relationship with Mike and I will continue to have one. I wish him and his family nothing but the best. I spoke with him today and thanked him for all of his hard work and sacrifice.

As a team, we must focus our energy on tonight’s game. We must block out the weight of today’s news and simply do our jobs to the best of our ability.

I’m not sure what direction we are heading in next. All I can do is focus on the here and now. Mamba out

It’s not hard for Bryant to say and do the right thing here, but he also didn’t have to do this. Bryant has a reputation, a lot of it well earned and a lot of it unfair, but he never crossed the line with Brown.

But he clearly wasn’t happy with the team’s direction, especially considering the results. Whether he privately blamed Brown or not doesn’t really matter. The team is 1-4, and while everyone is preaching an anti-panic message, the actions of the team today say otherwise. And it’s only going to get worse if the  don’t get better.

The Inbounds: D’Antoni, the nest of vipers, and a parodox of ego

content_img

(Getty Images)

Here’s the paradox. To be successful as a professional basketball player, you have to be confident. You have to have an ego. Every player will tell you this, and while they’re obviously biased, the results back it up. We’ve seen players who lost their confidence fail to execute in crucial moments, seen players lacking in talent or ability deliver in huge ways. And yet, it’s that confidence that can cause problems. Because one of the select (and I do mean rare) ways that an mirrors other real-life business situations is in the fact that everyone has to buy into the same goals. Even is a general level of success is the objective, without a central plan to achieve it and most if not all the individuals working towards that plan, which is engineered by the coaching staff, there’s going to be a breakdown. So how does a player deal with the fact that he trusts himself more than any other to make the right play and yet buy into the idea of someone else? The best coaches find the marriage of those two concepts. The ones who fail are those who cannot get players to buy in. Mike Brown never got his players to buy in. They didn’t openly revolt, they didn’t quit. But the total commitment wasn’t there. Likewise, a central concept is missing with interimhton striker Neal Maupay says Falmer stadium is becoming a fortress this season.Maupay believes the recent run of wins at Falmer will put opponents on their guard. He told The Argus: “Playing at home is easier for us. We have really good fans who ar coach Bernie Bickerstaff. Over the weekend, Kobe Bryant said that Bickerstaff was doing what he should, which is staying out of the way (in more colorful language, per Bryant’s typical lingo). That aspect should not be overlooked. From Auerbach to Jackson to Popovich, who Bickerstaff’s Lakers (at least for a few more days) face Teusday night, the best players on the greatest teams have not credited the four-down, the pick and roll, or even the mythical Triangle. They have credited coaches’ ability to trust their players, to respect their abilities and give them freedom to succeed. And in return, those players have played within a framework that allows the coaches to determine how to put players around those best stars to create something great. So as Mike D’Antoni gets ready to enter a viper’s nest this week, he should pay attention to the lessons from Popovich and Jackson. D’Antoni is a made man himself, an success story. But he’s facing a storm front disguised as a calm sea.The , like an old man sending back soup in a deli. The normally placid and docile city of cool is enraged by the fact that the Lakers didn’t bring back the Zenmaster, that pride has seemed to win out over common sense. That the beloved quote machine with all the rings has been rejected for the Stache who was forced out of New York and Phoenix before then. The quotes . Pau Gasol is disappointed. That’s fine. Gasol is pretty calm in general. But Howard is disappointed, and that’s an unstable situation. Chris Webber .So the normally fuzzy California is not exactly opening its fake plastic trees to make a spot for the Good Ship 7SOL. The best way to combat that is for D’Antoni to not try out of the box to make this team his. Ing CP midfielder Bruno Fernandes is confident making a move to Manchester United.Correio da Manha says Fernandes has remained “calm” about the situation. It is reported that Fernandes is confident of completing his switch to Old Trafford despite the st exists on its own, was brought together for a different purpose than to fit D’Antoni’s system. And while when the players have bought in, D’Antoni has rattled off 50-win year after 50-win year, and while the story of his time in New York brings with it a million stories of intrigue, that doesn’t matter now. What matters now isn’t the fact, what matters is the perception. What matters is what makes the players feel respected, trusted, and gives them a reason to buy in, in return. The system, the spacing, everything else can come after. For Tuesday, it’s not about D’Antoni. It’s 12 players trying to find a way to beat a team that’s less a collection of talent and more an institution, that has bonded execution and dogma in the Spurs. But as D’Antoni watches from L.A. or wherever he is and sees the men that have ended his playoff runs so many times, he should notice how Popovich has built a program that works on the back of a shared respect between Tim Duncan and the angry old man. D’Antoni knows more about basketball than I could ever hope to learn. But it doesn’t take a genius to recognize a math problem, and it doesn’t take a snake charmer to recognize a viper’s nest. There’s ego and there’s logic and in the NBA sometimes you haany Ineos has bought out Nice.Ratcliffe, who is Britain’s third richest man, had reportedly made a €100m (£88.77m) offer for the club earlier this year. He has expressed interest in Chelsea this year.Nice, managed by former Arsenal and France midfve to make room for one by putting aside the other. It’s just seldom the one you’d think.

Reports: Milwaukee Bucks agree to sign free-agent center Joel Przybilla

An NBA lifecycle has completed itself.

The Milwaukee have agreed to sign unrestricted-free-agent center to a 1-year veteran’s minimum contract 12 years after acquiring him in a 2000 day trade with the Houston , and mpetition. The Sun says Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers is ready to battle it out with United and Everton for Chelsea’s £15million-rated teenager James. The Foxes boss regards the 19-year-old full-back as one of the top young prospects in the coun. Przybilla, who spent his first 3-plus seasons in Milwaukee, also reportedly considered the Portland and Dallas  before signing with the Bucks.

Przybilla, 32, is a defense and rebounding specialist on his last legs. He missed much of the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons due to multiple knee surgeries. Reports: Knicks close to signing Rasheed Wallace

A report from that the were considering signing Rasheed Wallace is gaining some serious steam.

The 38-year-old unrestricted free-agent forward, who hasn’t played in the since April 2010, reporteribute to Khun Vichai on the anniversary of his death. The Foxes chairman died one year ago today along with four others when his helicopter crashed outside the King Power Stadium.Puel was the manager on the night City drew 1-1 with West Ham, hours bedly worked out for the team and underwent a physical this week. League sources confirmed to CBSSports.com that the Knicks are weighing the addition of Wallace despite the obvious questions about his age and conditioning.

On Friday,  Wallace would attend Knicks training camp, which opens next week. Newsday  a Wallace signing could come shortly.

Ken Berger of CBSSports.com reports that, according to a Wallace associate, Wallace will only come back to play with the Knicks because of his relationship with coach Mike Woodson, which dates back to their time together in Detroit, where Woodson was an assistant and Wallace was a star forward for the Pistons.

Wallace last played for the during the 2009-10 season. He  but has been linked in talks of a comeback on multiple occasions since then, , when he was rumored to be signing with the .

Once a physical forward with a feathery shooting touch, Wallace won a title with the 2004 . Given the contly Echo says his current deal runs out in the summer, but it’s expected the striker will sign an extension before the season is out.Long, 33, has an admirer in Ralph Hasenhuttl and has played a key role in the club’s turnaround in form since the begiinued employment of aging veterans (including Thomas and Camby), it’s understandable that Wallace would survey the landscape. Wallace was fairly durable into his 30s, playing at least 75 games in five of his last six seasons. Still, he’s going on 30 months since he has played in an NBA game. Any chance of a meaningful contribution would seem to be unlikely, although his role as a deep reserve big man in New York would likely be very limited: hit wide open mid-range shots and give fouls around the rim.According to Basketball-Reference.com, Wallace made more $156 million in salary during his 15 NBA seasons. He posted career averages of 14.6 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game during a career that included stops with the , , ,sident Javier Zanetti has admitted interest in Barcelona midfielder Arturo Vidal. The two clubs are in talks about an initial loan deal for the Chile international.“We’ll see how the transfer window goes, as we have a month to get things done,” Zane Detroit Pistons and Celtics.

Thunder-Grizzlies Game 2: Mike Conley carries Grizzlies to 1-1 split

content_img

For a team that is so conceptually bound to the idea of being gritty, a bunch of guys who were “outcasts” according to their point guard,  there’s something ironic that their emotional core is such a standup, measured, and focused individual as Mike Conley.

In Game 2 vs. the Thunder, the Memphis Grizzlies were running uphill, on an escalator going the other direction, in an ice storm. They were making things remarkably difficult for themselves. Missing open looks, missing layups, throwing turnovers in transition in easy scoring opportunities. They were down, and it looked like even without Russell Westbrook, Kevin Durant might be good enough by himself to step up and deliver a 2-0 lead.

But Memphis started gritting and grinding, playing their game, and making plays. And their point guaidfielder became the Foxes record signing after joining from Monaco on Monday.Tielemans said: “I believe that we have the talent in our squad to achieve something special and for any player, that’s an exciting thing to be a part of. I really can’t ward, who they drafted and who they have trusted and who they have seen blossom into a tremendous point guard on both sides of the ball, stepped up.

Conley’s second-half shot chart:

Conley in the first half: 3 of 10, 7 points, 7 assists, 1 turnover.Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic aims to stay with Bayern Munich. The Croatia midfielder is currently on-loan with Bayern.”I too think that’s possible,” he told the German giants’ official website.”Everything’s positive in Munich so far, both in private and in terms of football.”I have a one-year loan contract plus option to purchase. I’m just taking it step by step, from day to day. Let’s see.”

Conley in the second half: 8 of 10, 19 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 turnover.

From facillitator to scorer, and a defender all the way through, Conley was the leader for Memphis Tuesday night. He set the tone. While Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol bullied inside and the Grizzlies swallowed up offensive rebounds,Conor Coady was left delighted with their Europa League win against Crusaders.Wolves won the first-leg of their qualifier 2-0.Coady said, “We wanted to make sure that we set the foundations for the whole season, and I think we’ve started with a goo Conley kept the tempo where it needed to be. Memphis needed to control the pace of the game, and on offensive rebounds, Conley reset the offense. He attacked in transition, he punished the Thunder for helping down on the Memphis bigs, and helped contain the Thunder perimeter attack in the second half.

The Grizzlies lost Game 1 because they couldn’t sustain their offense. In Game 2, Conley set the tone and in the end, hit the dagger to put Memphis in the lead for good.

Conley was drafted with a lot of questions. He was the question mark between he and Greg Oden (whoops). He was given an extension based on potential, and the decision was blasted, . Since then he has become the point guard that can score, dish, and manage the offense, which gets overlooked in the super-athletic point guards of today.

He’s become the soul of the team, the homegrown star, especially with the end of the Rudy Gay era. And while the team will always go with Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph, no game better illustrates what MCPG means to Memphis than Game 2.

And the dagger was nice, too.

Game 4: Spurs locker room no party as team turns to final business

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — It wasn’t a jubilee, or anything.

The ‘ locker room after their Game 4 win to sweep the and advance to the Finals for the fifth time in franchise history and their first since 2007 wasn’t some big party. No champagne, no beer, no big raucous scene. There weren’t wild hugs or anyone singing or rapping.

It was happy. Just, you know, not that happy. It was more like an office after the whole team had just closed a major deal on a Friday afternoon. smiled for the cameras with a “Best in the West” T-shirt. seemed genuinely thrilled with having advanced this far.

But making the Finals is the kind of thing that translates to human emotions, even in the Spurs-O-Tron 5000’s.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling,” Parker said. “It’s really hard to go to the Finals, to win a championship. Every team wants to beat you, and that’s why it makes it even more special to go back after all those years playing at a high level with the same coach, with the same big three but changing a couple of pieces. If we go all the way it’ll definitely be my favorite because it gets harder and harder.”

If you wanted the real proof of what this means, look no further than the smile, yes smile, on ne point, a frustrated City boss Pep Guardiola berated Hasenhuttl for what he thought were Southampton delaying tactics.”I think Pep was a little nervous he could lose the game. You saw how much he was celebrating when they scored,” said the Saints mthe face of Gregg Popovich. The surly, recalcitrant general for the Spurs actually seemed relaxed and happy after the victory.

“Well, I appreciate (making the Finals),” Popovich said. “Maybe I don’t show it the way I should, but it’s pretty special. I’m just really proud of this group, the way they’ve worked all year long to get there and I’m sure that we’ve been a team that’s probably been written off like they’ve had their day… and it seems logical. I would probably have said the same thing if I was a fan from the outside looking in. It doesn’t show the way these guys compete and what they think.”

To a man, the Spurs said nothing changed with Popovich’s approach before the game. No special talk being that close to the Finals, no extra motivation with a chance to close out a team on the road and get nine days off. Popovich just went back to work, did the same thing he’s been doing since he arrived, and led his team to victory and his fifth Finals appearance.

There were hugs, high fives, and a few moments of genuine “wow” from the younger players in the Spurs locker room. It was a happy scene. Save one.

did his time. He spoke to the cameras for the allotted amount. He gave the quotes to the throng. Then he finished getting dressed, in jeans, never a suit, and headed out for treatment. People congratulated him, he thanked them, honestly and sincerely. And then he left, another opponent vanquished, with the fifth ring now four wins away.

Duncan will stop someday, maybe someday soon. And we may never hear from him again, despite being one of the best players of all-time. He’ll go somewhere, sit on an island, drink beer and swim.

He’ll stop someday.

But not yet.

The party hasn’t started, another big deal was just completed. The Spurs still have work to do. They’re happy to have the opportunity to.

But they’re also ready to get to work.

It could be the return of from his Achilles injury he suffered last spring, and will be the regular season debut of Doc Rivers as the Clippers’ newest head coach.

It’s a massive gamble by the NBA, considering Rose’s struggles returning from his ACL injury suffered in the 2012 playoffs and Bryant’s more recent Achilles surgery. If those players were to miss the opening night, it’s going to make for a very underwhelming opening night of basketball, regardless of the markets involved for ratings.

Opening week continues on Thursday with the Bulls hosting the in what is likely to be Rose’s return to the United Center in the regular season. The Knicks will be on a back to back, opening the season on Wednesday vs. the . Thursday night the revamped visit the Clippers, who are clearly the hot team, with two national appearances in the first three days.

Opening week concludes Friday with the ‘ home opener vs. the , followed by another Lakers home game, this time vs. the defending Western Conference Champion .

And in the night cap, the Clippers visit Oracle Arena to take on Steph Curry and the Warriors.

On Jan. 20, the NBA will continue its tradition of making Martin Luther King Jr. Day a huge basketball event, with four games on the schedule. Brooklyn travels across the bridge to take on the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, followed by the hosting the , the Lakers taking on the Bulls at the United Center, and the facing the Warriors in the bay to cap off the night.

The Lakers will first meet Dwight Howard on Nov. 13 in Houston, and again on Jan. 14. They first host Howard at Staples Center on Feb. 19, and again on April 8.

The NBA Finals rematches will occur on Jan. 26 in Miami and March 6 in San Antonio. Will Gregg Popovich rest his starters? It’s not a back to back, as the Spurs face Atlanta on the 24th, but it is in the middle of a three-game road trip.

Despite the departure of Dwight Howard, the Lakers keep the max number of nationally televised (non-NBA TV) games in the league at 25, tied with the Knicks and Heat. The Clippers have 21 nationally televised games, while the defending Western Champs, the Spurs, only have 15. The Bulls jump to 24 national games, with the league banking on Rose’s return to carry audiences. The Thunder also feature on national TV 24 times.

Houston, with newly-signed Dwight Howard and , feature 20 games on national television, a pretty low number given the star power. The won the NBA title in 2011, and now have just eight national TV appearances. The Warriors meanwhile jump to 17 games, while Eastern Conference finalist Indiana only appears 10 time next season. To put that in perspective, the appear 13 times.

The are supposed to have a fresh start after leading the league in games missed due to injury in the 2012-13 season. With everybody healthy and the team looking to be an offensive juggernaut if everything goes correctly, the Wolves are hoping to find their way into the playoffs for the first time since the 2003-04 season when they went to the Western Conference finals on the shoulders of Kevin Garnett. They had playoff hopes last season but those were dashed halfway through when the injuries just continued to pile up.

One of those injured players that missed significant time was . He re-signed with the Wolves this offseason on a three-year deal for $15 million despite missing so much time with a lateral tear in his left meniscus. Budinger was supposed to compete for the starting small forward position this season, but it looks like that will be on hold. The Wolves sent out a press release about an injury Budinger sustained to his left knee.

The Minnesota Timberwolves today announced that forward Chase Budinger sustained a cartilage injury to his left knee. Budinger will visit Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Alabama early next week. An update to Budinger’s status will be provided after that examination.

The Wolves also announced that Budinger will undergo surgery on the knee to either repair a more serious injury or scope the knee in hopes of helping bring it back to 100% health and strength. :

The Wolves announced Budinger would need a procedure done after suffering a cartilage injury to that left knee before he is able to play this season. No timetable was announced, but Budinger will at least undergo a scope to try and once and for all get hihe former midfielder played for both clubs – who will meet today.Petit said: “Frank has made such a huge improvement since he left Derby.“The results for Chelsea are so-so – they win, they draw, they lose.“But I’ve been very impressed by ths knee back to full strength.

The le time away from the first team.Klopp says Alisson “will still take time” to recover from the calf injury he picked up against Norwich City earlier this month.”Alisson made steps, but it was a proper injury. It will still take time,” he said.”The calfft knee is the same knee that caused Budinger to miss 59 games last season. While the severity of the knee injury isn’t known at the moment, a trip to see Dr. James Andrews doesn’t usually just happen so everything can be cleared as a scare and send Budinger on his way with a lollypop.

Budinger made it throuMessi was presented with his sixth golden boot award on Wednesday, flanked by his two sons, Thiago and Mateo, as the Spanish football fraternity gathered to celebrate yet another remarkable year of brilliance from the Argentine international.”Althouggh six games at the start of last season before tearing his meniscus. He didn’t return until March 21 and was slow to work his way back into feeling confident on his leg. He averaged 9.4 points and 3.1 rebounds in 22.1 minutes last season in his 23 games. He shot 32.1 percent from 3-point range after a career-high 40.2 percent in the 2011-12 season.
